Good floor mats for machine shop?

Hey there:

any recommendations? I'd like to keep metal turnings and chips out of our office. Obviously, it helps if guys wipe their feet, but we've got some mats at entrances to offices (which are carpeted) but I'd like to find something -- maybe coco fiber (posted an illustration from the Mcmaster-Carr site -- but they ain't cheap) or some synthetic thick thing that'll help trap those chips and turnings and keep them from tracking in on the carpet.

The most effective floor mats I saw used in the office area of a plant, it was actually something sticky (flypaper with less tack) but enough to pull the dirt off your shoes. It definitely worked, the carpets stayed a lot cleaner but I think they ended up having to change the film enough to not really be economically feasible.

Expanded metal works very well, especially when combined with a catch tray.

Regular floor mats don't work because the soft fibers don't pull the embedded chips out.

This. I would hate to be the one that had to clean metal chips out of a carpet/mat. Something that would just let them fall through into a tray that could be swept out once a month or something would be ideal.

If you have a laundry service check with them if they have an appropriate rug that they will clean weekly.

Do you have a link to give me an idea of what you mean?

I have catch trays under (or around -- depending) machines like lathes and cold saws but I'd also thought about those restaurant mats with a lot of holes or slats.

I would hate to be the one that had to clean metal chips out of a carpet/mat.

You and me both I'm thinking, to an extent., this might be unavoidable. When I had machines located at one end, it was never a problem. With more machines closer to other entrances, it's becoming one. We can live with it, but a lot of office guys are shop guys so stuff gets tracked around.
