What I have now 30A

I can ditchwich, and dig this. I know I need conduit for sure. I know I need a sub panel, and know I need a box in the shack. Trying for 200A. I have wired entire circuits in my youth and am getting conflicting info, and the inspector wanted $200 to tell me "hire an electrician." Luckily the words were out of his mouth befere the ink was dry. I plan on 220 on a separate circuite just for a welder. everything else 110. wiring the building isn't a problem. going from here to the is. and this damn tropical storm. 14 inches of rain and counting...

I think you would be wise to hire a licensed electrician to do the work. Maybe you could assist him and save some money. Like dig the trench, etc. That way you follow code and get the installation done correctly. The inspector is happy and you can go about your business. Yes, it will cost you a bit but you will probably be better off in the long run.

Otherwise, you need to spend some time studying the electric code for your area. Then do the work and TRY and get it inspected.

I am an Electrical Engineer with the FAA and I really understand your concerns. But I really think you would be wise to hire a Licensed Electrician.

Good Luck

thanks coolreed. I've been trying to snooker electricians into basically saying "buy this, this and this, dig a hole and call me." no real takers just yet. experts and their glorified expertise, and all that. hehe. I intend to have someone do the subpanel and box in the shop, just wanted really to know size/kind of wire and the correct conduit so I can have that ready.

Just so you know. You CANNOT come from that "box" at the house. That is only a meter main with NO provisions for branch circuits.
You must come from the panel inside the house.

After I had a chance to cool off, an electrician came out and said an add'l box could be installed ajacent to that "box." He had a van with a license number on the side. This **** is killin' me. Guess he may be in kahootz with the fire brigade.

But he cannot come off that meter/disconnect either. He will have to run a wire from the panel in the house all the way out to where ever it will exit the house. I have that same panel, there are no provisions for additional breakers/circuits/knockouts in that panel. Don't know why, there is a lot of room, they could have engineered two or four breaker spaces if they had wanted to, but its strictly a disconnect, nothing more.

you guys are awesome! I'm going to call FPL and see what an engineer says about an additional drop or the meter main that aceman suggested. I'm still pissed the jackleg electrician said he could just drop straight from the meter disconnect. All B.S aside, guess I'm going to cut the cheapskate activity out. Fires ****
