Good for a drill press??

i, I was wondering if this is a good motor for a drill press?? I don’t know how to identify if this motor can be used vertically. Thanks.

Yes, the motor won't know if it's vertical or horizontal.

If the frame, shaft size, rotation and RPM are correct then use it.

I’ve read that some motors have bearings and others “sleeve bearings”, which will worn out if the motor is not designed to be in vertical position.

very good chance it's designed for horizontal use , but I would think it would hold up to a drill press for a long time, unless you put a lot of hrs on it

Well, it’s posted on Craigslist for $25. The post says that it has a paint pump attached.

Well, I won’t be using the drill that much. Only for little projects around the house and some metal fab for my Jeep.

It's not a standard frame motor so it wont mount up easily. If you are okay with doing fab work it can probably be made to work just fine for a drill press though.

No, it won't work without a whole lot of monkeying around. The shaft end is different for pump use. Putting a pulley on that would be a major pain. You would need to turn the shaft to a standard size and add a keyway or use a two piece clamp type pulley which would cost more than the motor.

Given the non std. shaft and mount, it could be a big PIA. There are a lot of good used motors out there. Find one with the correct shaft length/O.D. and mount. (the bearings would be the least of my concerns)

It is my experience that "most" motor manufacturers use the same bearings for horizontal or vertical motors in the "under" 400 frame sizes. Years ago I worked at a machine design firm and I don't recall ever specifying "vertical or horizontal" when specifying drive motors for machines under 10HP. Most general purpose motors can be used in "machine tool" circumstances with no mention of vertical or horizontal orientation.
With that said, the motor the OP is looking at is not going to easily adapt to his drill press, more work then is necessary.
