Good hex bit socket set?

The bits are small and they need to be very hard to not yield and strip out. If the entire socket is as hard as the bit, it would shatter when used with an impact gun. So the one piece models are usually softer than the two piece, and not great to use (except when new and crisp).

It is possible to differentially harden a tool, making one portion harder than another. But this is complicated and can be expensive. Snap On differentially hardens their diagonals so that the cutting edges are harder than the rest of the tool. So it can be done.

Here's those Proto impact.

I'll second these Protos. I use them a whole bunch, as I service european cars. My dad handed these down to me. They are solid. I have used them on rear axle bolts on MB and BMW which can be a pain especially when dummies loctite them. They are still going strong, have not broken, or rounded. Aside from my protos, I have an extensive amount of Hazet torx, e-torx, hex, triple square, and ball hex. I love them. Very durable, and I abuse them. Have used chromes with impacts, and beat the rear of them into grimey bolts, and they take the abuse.

If you plan to use them impact, get them in impact. if not, totally optional. At a minimum, the base socket for impact will, be made same/similar to reg impact sockets so they don't shatter.

I have no complaints about my Grey pneumatic impacts, haven't broken one yet in severe service.
