Good Long-Range Spotlight?

I used to have a halogen spotlight that plugged into my cigarette lighter, and it was pretty decent. Well, it burned out and I never replaced it. The other day, I had to help a friend look for her lost dog. A black dog, at midnight... All I had was a mag-light and my van headlights, and lets say I missed my spotlight dearly...

Anyhow, with all the latest LED technology, I just wonder if anybody makes a good long-throw portable spotlight? Something that can really light up 150+ft or so? I know many of the LED flashlights I have owned are great for short distances, but their light doesn't carry very far. I just wonder if there are any better ones out there. I am not opposed to a cigarette-lighter powered unit again, but something battery powered would be even better. I just want something to obnoxiously light up a cornfield! LOL

So what do you have? What have you heard? Lets see some spotlights!

I would NOT use the term "spotlight" flashlight to do this. Distances of 150 feet is not that difficult to light up. You want a "flood' not a 'thrower' in flashlight lingo.
anyway...if you want a good floody see below
I recently purchased Energizer HD Vision @ ANSI rated 900 lumens. It's basically a handheld 6xAA powered car headlamp. LoL It's built like a tank but actually feels like high quality double C flashlight in hand. Best of all the color tint is very neutral white with a wide smooth pattern, no weird artifacts seen. Does it light up large swaths of landscape? yes indeed. It has 3 modes on a old school style Maglite type switch. Highly recommended and not expensive!! I have quite a few LED flashlights.

I guess you didn't try to replace the bulb in your old spot. Still have it? You can find almost anything on line, obsolete or not.

TRUE !

For non-LASER light the difference between a "spot" and a "flood" has more to do with the design of the reflector than the type of "bulb". All spot lights will widen out at longer distances, it is just how much wider they get at what distance. A spot light from a helicopter may spread out 50' but that is from an altitude of 200-500' or more.

I like the Go Light with a magnetic base. You can get a variety of bulb and lens configurations.

That's the whole issue, I can't find my old spotlight. I hadn't used it in years, and I remember the bulb burning out, and the front glass was cracked, so I assume I threw it out. The hoarder in me must have that memory blocked out, lol.

Thanks for the terminology help. I don't know much about the "flashlight world".

I do see that Energizer 900 lumen unit is at O'Reilly for $24.95 right across the street from me. I might swing over there and get it.

Just solved your problem. Cabelas, the hunting and fishing outfit, like Bass Pro Shops, is selling a halogen 1000000 candle power, plug in, 12 volt, halogen , hand held spot light for TWENTY BUCKS. It sounds like your old one. I figured if I checked marine and hunting and fishing places I'd find one. I had one on my sailboat. Used it to spot buoys when coming in from the ocean, in the dark, to stay in the channel.

Do you have a cordless tool platform? Dewalt makes a 20v Spotlight that's pretty good, Milwaukee makes a new m18 search light with spot and flood light that's pretty awesome.. Both are between $90 and $100 as a bare tool.. Milwaukee makes a smaller m12 model spotlight too.

I have the m18 and the Dewalt at work.. They are both impressive, but I like the dual feature of the m18 with the spot, flood and hybrid mode.. It has a rotating head and doubles as a work light, with a 4 hour runtime, (4.0 pack) 1000 lumens and 700+ yard throw distance.

These are not 'huge area" tower mounted prison search lights- but they are good.

The Costco Duracell flashlights are very well made too, are cheaper, smaller, and have a focusing lens that will do spot and flood also.

Assuming those numbers are accurate, it is an EXCELLENT light at that price point. More lumens than even the Streamlight 3C Xenon!

I believe a reputable company wouldn't fudge ANSI . It's basically same as a halogen car headlamp. E.g it really blasts those lumens to get the raw distance, but it aint no lazer like my old 4 cell Maglite at 100 yards.

Well, I picked up the Energizer 900 Lumen. $24.95 at O'Reillys. I snatched it up on my lunch break today, so I haven't had time to open it or mess with it yet. I'll see how it does pretty soon.

I messed with it last night in my yard, and it's pretty impressive so far. I didn't get to test the long-range yet, it was too foggy and the light just was absorbed by the fog. But it seems to be pretty insane for its size!

Funny, my dog is not very observant, but when I was lighting up the yard with the flashlight, I came across a rabbit, and he immediately saw the rabbit and took off after him, lol. Maybe I should get him a doggy-headlamp :)
