I'm looking for a good multimeter for diagnosing electric forklifts. I've seen some as high as 54v so I'd like something that won't blow up in my hands. I know this topic has been beaten to death around here but the search function turned up nothing.

Heck, 54 volts ain't nothin! ;)

Even the freebie HF meter will do that.

Like srmofo said - If you want a reliable, good quality unit, Flukes are pretty much the ones to get.

Good lord, the man is working on electric forklifts not a space capsule !

You don't need to spend even $100 ! Just get on that has a rubber outer case. I use the Craftsman $25 one, which regularly goes on sale for $20.

Fluke 117. Retail at grainger@ $130.00. I bought one last month. It may be overrated for your current uses and cost a bit more now BUT it you ever use a cheap underrated no name meter on higher voltages in the future and it fails on you your will never forget it.

This is what I use:http://www.extech.com/instruments/product.asp?catid=26&prodid=81

I'm in the industrial battery and charger business, the ones that go in your electric forklifts. :) The meter above has essential stuff you will need in trouble shooting your trucks. DC amperage and capacitance will be invaluable for you. AC amperage will be good if you work on the newer AC trucks. If you only buy a multimeter you will looking for these meters individually anyway. So just get them in one nice package now.

I looked for a meter like this for quite some time, and this Extech is loaded for the price. I actually shelved my Simpson 260(great meter, but fragile) for it. I think you can find the Extech for $150-$170ish (American) online.

I going the upgrade the the next model up soon. I put 480 VAC across the resistance setting and needless to say I can't measure resistance with it any more. :) The IR temp on the higher model will be great for me as well.

UEi DM393 would be one to consider (has sufficient protection circuits, built ruggedly, and well within budget, which should leave you with enough to get additional leads/connector ends you might need as well).
