Good oil drain pan?

Are there any alternatives to the same old Blitz brand oil drain pans for us DIY'ers without a lift?

I only have and see these around...

I hate it, it always leaks everywhere. And if you drop the drain plug into the top, you have about 5 seconds to get it out before it over flows and you have oil all over the floor...:shocking:

I had one of those and threw it out in the trash.

I use one similar to this:

Then I transfer the oil to one of these to take to the recycling yard.

I picked up an 8 qt rectangular one from harbor freight that works great and doesn't leak (and also holds more like 10 qts). Problem is I can't find it on the new HF site.

I have the second one (In a very fetching shade of blue.) and i transfer the waste oil into a 20L plastic jerry can kinda thing. Works perfect for me. I wash it out after every couple uses with petrol and it still looks new.

I have 4 of the top ones stacked up in the corner. I use those for Oil and ****** Fluid then the open smaller ones for Coolant. Or a 5 gallon bucket.


All of my Oil gets recycled. Weeeeeeeeeeeell I guess all of it except a jug or two for some mega burn pile starters out on Pops property. =)

I have one of the junky $3 ones from the auto parts store. When its full I shove a funnel down into the collection of empty milk jugs I have and drop the used oil off at autozone.

Kind of rednecky I guess but it works.

Got the second one. Used it today. Works great and the neck fits into the plastic 5 gallon gas cans perfect. Swing by advance after the can gets full.

I have one like the top but it's open on the top. Holds 4 gallons I think, so it's fine for most stuff until you get into heavy equipment. For big trucks we had the bottom of a 55 gal drum on some casters. Drained it in to a 500 gal tank with a vac pump.

The only thing that ***** with the open top is stuff will drop into it, but at least you can get it out. I had a closed top one that an important bolt fell into and I had to cut it open to get it out.

Yep, I prefer the closed top to avoid big messes, I've got one that has a large screw on cover. I'd like to see a better quality covered one, the plastic threads on them are usually ****.

You can put some type of metal screen across the top of open ones. Let the drain plug fall and it sits on top of the screen. It works great.

they don't. they work great. i used to have them a couple of my audis and i currently have on on my manlift.

they're great for when the drain plug is in a crappy location. E.g., on the manlift, the oil drain is above a reinforcement plate so if you just take out the drain plug, the oil drains out on this plate and just goes everywhere and makes a terrible mess. With the fumoto, I attach a piece of poly tubing to the ****** (n-series) and drop the other end into my oil drain pan.

My main floor oil drain pan is like this one: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000MCZJVQ/?tag=atomicindus08-20. I think it's a Blitz, though.

I have two like the OP posted, as does one of my friends. Its fair to say we've drained hundred of gallons of fluid into them. Once in a while you will misplace it and it will splash, but usually its excellent, and stackable, and I can do a couple of oil changes before draining it (tho I don't advise that).

For liftless folks, the Fumoto is great thing...if you can reach the plug on your car you're all set, and the oil change becomes quick and easy if filter is decently reachable. It cannot give quite the sudden rush of oil that removing the plug would as it necks things down a bit, but it is large enough not to be a problem. You want that sudden flow to help carry out any crud...
My experience says that for this you want the tallest container that will slide under there, with open top; if I had the thing in the first picture I would cut out a lot of the top leaving a substantial rim as anti-splash. This is a case where making the job as neat and fast as possible pays dividends in car life...I found myself changing oil right on time once I had the good ball valve, proper container, and best possible filter wrench for my car, since all I had to do was lie down on a clean sheet of cardboard and stick one arm under there to do the job. No jacking and blocking up, no getting filthy to suggest putting off the job.

I just bought the first one last week. I don't know how it works yet, I plan on changing the oil in my truck this week. :thumbup:

Fumoto valve is very handy to fill oil sample containers as well.

I have almost 30,000 miles on the oil in one of my trucks. Costs me about $70 an oil change and oil samples are free, so I have saved ~$200.

I have the first one and just pulled the green center plug out it since it would often get clogged or stuck in the down position (to which overflow ensues). If the drain plug falls into the hot oil I just retrieve it with a magnet tool. I then transfer the used oil to the spent 5 quart oil container I last emptied (then recycle at Autozone).
