Good pants for garage work?

I guess you could consider pants tools!

I'm looking for a good set of pants for DIY garage work. Right now, I use old Levi's jeans that are worn out and no longer are what I would consider good for work or going out. But they don't hold up and end up with holes and rips, especially on the thigh, the knees, and the rear pocket areas. Most of the work I do is in the driveway (asphalt) and on my concrete garage floor, and the bulk of abuse comes from crawling, scootching under cars, lifting, climbing, sitting on the floor, and using my legs to brace heavy things like tires.

Any advice on rugged pants that won't give out in a year? I'd prefer made in USA. Thanks.

Dickies double-knee pants. For jeans, I have found Levi's wear thin more quickly. My Wrangler ranch jeans hold up much better than Levi's (and cost less too). Haven't worn Levi's jeans in a few decades. My Wrangler and Dickies cargo pants have held up well to abuse, and I like the price of them better than Carhartt.

The Riggs workwear line of jeans, pants and shirts by Wrangler are sturdy and hold up well; I wear the Wrangler Riiggs Workwear shirts and really like them. The Riggs Workwear Tradesman pants/jeans have double-knees and crotchet gusset; I don't own a pair yet so I can't say how well those hold up.

I just bought a pair of two sizes too big sweat pants and a two sizes too big sweatshirt from the closeout bin somewhere and pull them on over whatever I'm wearing. I'd worry that I look homeless but since I'm at home I figure I'm good.

Im still a fan of Dickies work shorts/pants. Cheap, readily available anywherer, and tough as nails.

Dickies work jeans at Walmart their fantastic for $20 a pair. Plenty of pockets, very durable comes in all colors black, blue, tan, brown, olive. I have the carhartt that are double the price but prefer the cheaper dickies.

I wear the regular dickies blue twill pants at work and hate them I wish I could wear the jeans instead

I have the $12 blue mountain from tractor supply and they are holding up well so far. I have had them for 6 months (or was it 5, idk) and have had no issues. I use to wear the $20 wranglers from Walmart but they always would blow out to the left of the fly after a year. I did try out all of the other pants at tractor supply but all the others seemed tight in the junk area in one way or another. I have been losing weight since I bought them, which is another reason I bought them, since they are cheaper. I would say they are at least worth double what they sell them for.

Firehose pants from Duluth Trading. They make several different styles. Bulletproof.

Agreed. Also, Arborwear tree climber's pants -- very durable material with a double layer in the knees and thighs:

But honestly, I mostly wear old junky clothes in the garage rather than fancy $65-$100 pants.

I guess there are two main approaches to the problem -- more durable clothes or clothes you don't care about.

I normally wear my uniform from work at home. If not those I wear classic Dickie's uniform pants. I keep those for shop work to keep my normal jeans out of the shop and in kinda good shape. Fall threw spring if I see any outside work in the plans for the day, carhart heavy duck bibs. If you like jeans, Dickie's carpenter style jeans are my choice, tough and cheap.

Classic dickies uniform pants or double knee ones. Failing that I will wear my old wrangler relaxed fit walmart jeans. Levis **** and fall apart, been there done that. The dickies hold up super well but aint cheap, wranglers ar elike 15/ea and I only wear old ones so I dont care if I ruin them.

God could any product fall as bad as Levi? They use to be the only thing I wear. Gladly spend $40 a pair. Then after buying three pairs that were junk after one weekend wrenching, I have sworn them off. Total ******* garbage.

Double knee Carhartts or Wild *** jeans. They just simply work. Prices on the wild *** jeans are very competitive.

Black sweat pants and black sweat shirt. Does not show stains. Comfy for old fat people when sitting down and getting back up.

I have an old pair of Walls insulated overalls that's old and worn out that I use for getting down and dirty. Plus the overalls keeps my *** crack in my pants. I think I got it on clearance at Walmart for $20 during the warmer months.

get carhartt about 45% off. $20 for a pair of jeans.

all made in mexico. seems like the ones with white pockets (a few years ago) held up better than the more recent (gold/brown pocket) ones. no way to know. im no scientist or statistician. in any case, the only areas that have wear are near pockets, where small holes wear through due to stretching from my bulging crotch, or the knees.

I just use old Kahki pants I can't wear to work any longer. When they are too dirty or worn out I throw them away.

I tried Carhartt pants once, but they get way too hot in the summer because they are so thick.

I just put holes in my flannel lines carhart pants. Got them on 2011 when I was working for directv and sliding around of roofs. Most pants didn't last a month.

I'd suggest you keep a few pieces of cardboard or carpet around for your asphalt skooching. I go through a couple refrigerator boxes a year, they get drips and leaks and eventually they're dirtier than the ground I'm trying to stay off.

Also, clean cardboard is easy to slide around on under the car.

Jeans are terrible.

Just raid the closet.
I use a pair of horrifically out of style flannel lined pleated KHAKIS I got in the 90s.
They are baggy so I can put on a 2nd layer, if needed.
I also double up on 2 huge *** flannel shirts that I don't care about.
They are perfect for car work.

Another recommendation for the fire hose pants. You can't beat them. Get on the mailing list and you will get a 20% off and free shipping over $49.00 coupon before you know it.

Right now they are 30% off but no free shipping.

I often will wear a pair of my uniform pants that I've used sometime that week and then turn them in for laundry day...already dirty, no wear and tear on my clothes, and less resources used = win win. Also nice lightweight fabric vs heavy *** jeans or carhartts is better for the summer time.

I wish it were true.....

They are by far the most comfortable work pants I have ever worn, but I started blowing the knees out in six to eight months. ( From the inside out oddly enough )
Replaced all ten pair under warranty. This time started blowing them out in just four months.
Got a full refund.

Obviously they are a GREAT company. I have been wearing their underwear for years now and they are the best. I just have not had any luck with their fire hose pants.

I am currently using Carhartt, and am seeing about two years before my knees start poking through.
