In Austin on business, with nothing scheduled over the weekend.

Are there particular pawn shops or flea markets that are good for finding used tools?

Google came up with Austin Appliance & Tools, the big Austin Country flea market and a slew of pawn shops. Are these worth going to?

Thanks!

You just have to look. Some good some bad like every where. Some of the pawn shops advertise on craigslist. Never been to the flea market except for First Monday Trades Day in Canton. Wife is a vendor so I can say I have been once or twice.

The Austin Appliance & Tools on brown lane is hit or miss... I usually stop by most saturdays and it is pretty well picked over. They buy returns to HD & Sears, fix them, and sell them. Great spot for saw Diablo blades though.

A lot of pawn shops advertise on CL.

OK, just stopped by Austin appliance and they're out of the tool business.

Also check eBay for anything within 100 miles of 78751, there are a few surplus dealers in the area. I just found a lista cabinet that way.

I haven't had much luck at pawn shops here locally. They seem to price everything that has a good name on it as much as new. But if you got time to kill, there are plenty of them to go look through.

Same around here. The prices are stupid high. They will come down on the prices a little, not much, making the prices still too high. They even had a taped together Ryobi drill bit set for $39.99. I had a chuckle over that. It was an older blue set; you can get a brand new green set for $19 at Home Depot.

This place is all corporatized with the 2 d-bags who work there wearing polo shirts with the logo of the store on them. Oh, and the requisite tattoos, ZZ Top beards, Oakley sunglasses hanging off their necks, and cocky attitudes as they're flirting up the pretty young women coming in to get pawn loans on their boyfriend's Xbox One (they pay off the ticket and then take out ANOTHER loan on it, lol).

Sadly in today's world that sounds like a lot of places.

Any names of good surplus dealers in the area?

http://www.ebay.com/usr/athomemarket is the same as http://www.dougdeals.com/default.aspx where I just got a Lista cabinet. 13000 current listings on eBay, 90,000 square foot warehouse.

http://www.lonestarauctioneers.com/ - heavy equipment, workshop equipment, and cars

http://www.tfc.state.tx.us/divisions/supportserv/prog/statesurplus/index.html office and workshop furniture is all I've browsed there, I should return

I guess Austin Appliance redirected their tools to an auction in Lockhart. Bah.

Interesting thread.

My entire life, if i saw a pawn shop anywhere, had the time and could park, I would "check it out".

Approximately four minutes later, I would always be saying to myself "Ok, where is the good stuff", since all I would see is a small amount of ****, that was beat to death, 40 years old and had a price tag, triple what it should be selling for.

Maybe it was bad timing.

Big Country flea market was good. One seller has a slew on Snap-on but no great deal, they know what it is, still cheaper than the truck though. Got fill in Craftsman, SK, and Husky from a few different sellers.

Kyle flea market is no where near as big, but bought a Snap-on F710 for $8. Needs repaired, but not bad for $8!

Might hit pawn shops tomorrow if they're open.

Mustang pawn on E 7th has a big selection but you'ii have to search thru the junk. I've not decoded their tickes. Also the pawn shop at Congress and stasney(SP?} they have a good selection. Their code is MARYLOUISE so that will help you get a better deal.

I live in Austin and have went to a few over the years, but have never found one that had anything priced less than retail.

Wish I could find a place locally that took old stuff and repaired them. I'd be applying there in a hot New York minute!

I've had great luck at pawn shops. What I've found is that about half of them don't have quality tools. I walk back out of these. The other half have decent stuff and about 95% of it is overpriced, but you can usually find a few items that are decent prices. You can then haggle and generally get 20-40% of of the sticker price.

For example I bought a Snap On Tech Angle torque wrench for $120. They had it marked $150, I offered $100 and we settled on $120 OTD. This pawn shop had a ton of other tools and it was all over priced or junk.

Today I was at another pawn shop and bought 7 Mac impact sockets, 1 Snap On, and 1 Williams all for $4. They had a ton of overpriced sockets, ratchets, and other tools. Then they had a bin of $.50 sockets (mostly junk), but had these buried in there.

You just have to skip over the overpriced stuff and look for the gem hiding. I've yet to find a pawn shop that has good prices on everything that they have.
