The mfgs continue to use slots so as to make it more difficult for the OCD types to get all of the screw slots aligned and not be too loose or too tight.
Then again, if you are using the proper, code required, tamper proof receptacles, your screwdriver could not enter the slot and zap you.
Reality is, I agree, they should be phillips. The other reality is, at some point in time, you will be removing or replacing a receptacle cover in your house without killing the circuit, such as to replace the cover because it is cracked, or you are going to a new style of cover in the whole house.

Yeah, I think straight slots are completely outdated. Not sure why they even use them for anything in general...
