I work for a small foundation contractor we have slowing been growing our fleet and equipment. They have added a bunch of trucks this year so I have been tasked with finding a scan tool that will do functional tests, forced regenerations live data and basically as much dealer level capabilities as we can get on duramax dodge Cummins and fords. We also have some heavy duty trucks that it would be nice if we could use the same scanner on them. They are sterlings, peterbuilt, kenworths. I’ve looked into autel maxisys ultra has anyone had one what are the capabilities there website doesn’t give much specifics on what it’s capable of testing and doing will it work for heavy trucks as well as light trucks. Is there something better that I haven’t heard of?thanks in advance!!

Highly unlikely !

Class 8 trucks (and probably some Class 7) do not use OBD-II.

I’m aware they don’t use obd 2 but I know autel has a lower level scanner that can do both with different adapters just not sure if there upper ones will.

I believe I have seen an Autel with different adapters to do light and heavy duty, but that could be something I dreamed up also  I really don't pay attention to anything heavy duty. A quick google search brought this up though, not sure if it would cover most of what you're wanting to do or not.

My main scanner in the shop is a SnapOn Verus Edge. I keep it updated to the most current versions, and while it will cover dang near everything you need to do, it does still lack a few things here and there. However I also have a J2534 pass-thru device (CarDaqM plus MegaCan) that allows me to program/reflash modules and also use it as basically a manufacturer specific scan tool through Motorcraftservice, ACDelcoTDS, and TechAuthority (Chrysler). I mainly only work on Ford, GM, Chrysler. So I basically have everything the dealer does. Newer Chryslers require WiTech though, which is something in its own.
Im not so sure that there is ONE scanner out there that will cover EVERYTHING.

If possible, try to find some shops or people with different scanners that you can play with to see how they suit your needs.

This one is out of date now, but the price is really decent for one.
The OTC Genisys and Genisys EVO had a big truck kit that had all the connectors and software to speak with big rigs up to at least 2015. All the way up to today on the generic side.

I actually tossed a bunch of cables from mine a few months back as I no longer work on "Everything" now just on mostly everything! You can get these great older tools on Ebay for less than $200 in many cases.
