Good quality drill bits

Are there good quality drill bits out there? I've been buying them by the dozen e.g. Black & Decker and would love to find some higher quality bits all the way up to 1".

The best way to get drill bits is to watch for big lots of bits on ebay, or go to farm sales and by big boxes of old bits. The older bits are way better quality than the new cheap ****.

The Hertels thru Enco are nice, and USA made so that should make the GJ crew happy. The best bit is one you know how to sharpen. Teach a man to fish.....

I disagree, old carbon steel bits are perty bad, I've yet to see a farm shop that buys premium bits, Ebay is a **** shoot. Modern metallurgy has come up with some great stuff.

I just found Nitro brand a the local welding supply (Matheson). Looks like good stuff.

I just bought a set of Hertel A-Z letter bits from MSC. 135 degree split point. $156 list, 45% off. On 3 of the bits the split point wasn't created properly. They were either under-ground or over-ground & they skated like crazy. Sent it back for free. The second set's split points were split properly, but there was generally a lack of uniformity in the overall drill point geometry, bit to bit. I noticed some of the bit's sizes were stamped, other's embossed, as though bits that had gotten separated from their original sets had been gathered up to make one set. I accepted the
second set since the price was right, but I've now paid for 2 sets & own 1.

Gonna call them Mon AM.

Anyone else have this problem with MSC and/or Hertel?

Chicago Latrobe and Cleveland twist drill have always been the old machinist preference .

A rich guy of Indian desent recently purchased some both brands along with Basset end mills and greenfield tap and die because he knew they were valuable and historical names and wanted to have them out from under the Kennemetal umbrella. Apparently made in GA. This is the story I got from the local tooling rep last week. http://www.gfii.com/site/

Anyone post SO for things like files, taps, and drill bits hasn't worked in a real machine shop. Name like Nicholson, Greenfield and Cleveland are the work horses in manual machine shops.

I've spent my whole life, almost 60 yrs, in machine shops......aerospace, research, nuclear. They've all run on cleveland drills, cleveland mo-max tool blanks and greenfield taps and dies.
