Hi,

I'm in the market for a good quality punch.

Must be either USA made or British made.

I have several SO punches but the one im looking to replace is one I've had for a long long time. It was made by a now defunct British company called Bilbow and it's been utterly fantastic.

It needs to be roughly 10 " long and have a tapered tip roughly 10mm in diameter at the end. The other end that is struck needs to be about an inch pref square but round would be OK.

I've checked a few times and SO don't seem to make anything that fits the bill.

The remaining British companies don't either.

Any ideas folks ?

I'm assuming you've checked the likes of Eclipse, Priory, Footprint etc!

Bear in mind that if someone such as Eclipse offer it, it will probably be listed with their cold chisels rather than with their engineers punches, on account of it's size!

PB Swiss offer one that's close - a 10mm tip and about 8 inches long has a part number of PB 730/10.

Alternatively, pick up a lump of inch Silver Steel and get anyone with a lathe to spin it the taper on it! I've got a pry bar my Grandfather made in a similar manner and it's got to have taken about 70 years of use! I also use a lump of untreated 1/2 inch silver steel for all manner of prying and drifting tasks, and that hasn't worn out either!

Bilbow or Gilbow? If the latter, I believe they're yet another Irwin abomination now, so possibly worthwhile checking their catalogue/site. Probably be best off looking for some of the old hex shank tapered punches on the likes of Ebay though, else as suggested earlier, getting someone to turn you one. You can have one made to your exact requirements that way.

I have a pair of Starretts that are very close to what you describe. Dunno the cost as I bought them in a bin of random tools from CL. VERY nice though.
