So I see the Matco guy walking through the shop today... stopping to see the techs, etc. I flagged him down and gave him my business card with the ratchet # for my CR17FT 1/2" flex head ratchet. Said I need to get a rebuild kit for this. Its not broken yet but its been not catching all the time and feels a little worn.

First thing he asked was do you have it with you? No.. didn't know when you came in, etc. Well I'm here every friday so just bring it in and I'll put a kit in it for you next week. So I said.. well I've got a box that I need two detents for as well. He said no prob just write the model # off the box so he can get me the right ones.

So I was kinda impressed that he was happy to warranty a ratchet sight unseen and was willing to take the time for some "parts guy" vs. one of the techs. Normally I take my stuff to a friend who has a great relationship with his Matco guy (thanks to the fact that he has a giant triple bay with lockers, etc). So kinda nice to know I don't have to run all over town for service. Now what do I want from the truck... hehe

Hell, I was expecting to hear about a real "run in" with yelling and whatnot. It's almost disappointing to hear that it went well. I've always had good luck with all of my tool drivers, and I consider my Matco guy a friend...he and I talk occasionally outside of work. Mobile dealers need to understand that the whole business is driven by personal relationships...if techs like you, and trust you, they will spend money on your truck, simple as that.

if I was him thats the way I would treat you

thoughts:
I have not sold this guy anything
this guy has tools
I could sell him more tools
new customer
I make more money....

not sure why more of the tool reps havent been thinking in these terms

I suspect that some tool reps used to be techs and do not have a "salesman" mentality. The odd thing is, if they thought back on why they bought from certain trucks when the were techs, and tried to emulate that person, they would likely be more successful.

I consider my last 2 Snap On dealers freinds I help my last one with his brother in laws dirt car and stay at his house sat. nights so I dont have to drive home at 1:00 in the morning. The dealer I deal with now comes to my house to eat lunch on thursdays I don't owe him any more money but like $200.00 we B.S. for an hour then he goes to his next stop He even let me use his lift, tools and heat at his barn to rebuild my transmission. He used to own his own shop, so he kept the lifts. I guess it helps that I have close to $100,000 in tools lol
