I was trying autel 30day trail before I return it, auto detects on few vehicles some dont. Really cant go in dept and program and reprogram any vehicles even the newer ones and any modules. Just gives basic live data info and other stuff that is not related to vehicle. Is there any good scanner that can go in depth with each modules in cars?

I have the Autel Maxisys MS908.

I've been using it on the family's small fleet of GM cars, trucks, SUVs, and cross-overs since last September.

I am a retired GM Powertrain Service engineer. I used and validated GM's scan tools: Tech 1, Tech 2, GDS, and TECH2WIN.

The MS908 has all the functionality of the TECH2 and GDS, including bi-directional control.

It has not failed to auto ID the vehicles I've used it on, so far.

I don't plan to do any controller programming; so, I did not choose the J2534 model.

I have already saved the purchase price, working on the oldest and most complex vehicle in the family fleet: 2004 Yukon Denali XL, with 240,000 on it.

I can't speak about other brands, but this model Autel has it all over the GM scan tools.

I am considering adding the Autel Scope, but I am also looking at other notebook based and stand alone lab scopes.

I'm not sure, so I asked Google.

"From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A passthrough device is used in conjunction with a computer to reprogram vehicle control modules through the OBD-II/CANbus port.[1] Each manufacturer has their own type, but SAE International standardized the J-2534 universal requirements in 2004, requiring all manufacturers to allow vehicles sold in the United States of America and Europe to accept powertrain reprogramming through specific universal parameters."

It appears that J2534 applies to only Powertrain.

I watch "New Level Auto" on YouTube. He does a lot of reprogramming on different makes and model vehicles.

Just a stab in the dark, but maybe he can give you some ideas.

He has that many because unfortunately there is no one aftermarket tool that does everything on all makes, not for any amount of money. Launch is good on Euro; Autologic is better, Autel and Snap-on are good on Domestics and OK on Asian except Hyundai, etc.

Need multiple tools these days. Nothing does everything.

I use Autel and OTC Encore for most everything.

For BMW and Mercedes I use cloned factory tools or Autel or OTC for basic stuff.

For Audi and VW I use Rosstech VCDS

Damn I was using autel on 2016 rav4 yesterday for c1297 code for steering angle sensor only thing I figured out was that in autel it showed angel stuck at 630 degrees. Thats all it would show me.

I hear he's one of Dunkin Donuts' best customers. :D
Ya I usually mess with audi/vw so I have vag com and then ended up buying a $1500 autel but really not amazed by it.

Do you have a scope? That's what I would start with for a SAS code after I checked ref voltage and ground.

The people on YouTube who make their living diagnosing automotive electrical problems (South Main Auto, New Level Auto) have MULTIPLE scan tools. Keith from New Level even has some OEM tools.

There is no single BEST !
