good scan tool question

I have read some on a scan tool but i going to need one soon and i want a few opinions please. I build wrecks no diesel as of yet most of them are light damage and i just do it on the side for myself and sell them for a little profit. I would like to have one that i can do most anything with but want break with bank, the last one i had was a otc in the 90s and i still have it but long outdated and don't ever use it anymore other then maybe a classic sometimes. I want to try to stay under 1,000 dollars more or less but if i could find one for 6,7 or whatever that will do want i want that will be fine. I don't care to pay a little extra for one that will do much more than the other. I would like to have one that i can program the certain computers on the car itself if possible, reset air bag and airbag computer and so on, like right now i have a 2022 Honda accord that want steer and it has a lot of codes on the dash and i am limited to what i can do other than borrowing or taking it to the dealer. I figure it's the computer to the steering or the rack is bad but without the scanner its guess work. I like the bidirectional for sure. Been reading a lot about the autel and topdon, etc. don't really care about the updates later as i will get them as i get newer cars, I am going to start buying a little older cars after this one because it's just getting too expensive us less i keep it for myself which I was going to do this for myself but i have decided to sell it when i get it fixed. Opinions please on a very good one that will do a lot.

Just my 2c but if you're brand loyal sometimes the official scanner isn't too bad of an investment.

I only buy Honda/Acura. I bought a used cable off eBay for $300 and I can use the software from Honda for $40 a day.

Anytime an issue comes up where my Autel can't handle it I use the exact same software the dealer has.

I do like the Autel scanners. I've used the MX808 to program immobilizers and remote start modules on new cars.

I'm personally an Autel fan. Autel makes and sells scan tools under another name called OTOFIX and those scan tools run full Autel software but they include 2 years of free updates, instead of the standard one year when you by an Autel branded scan tool. I recommenced either the OTOFIX D1 Lite, OTOFIX D1, or the OTOFIX D1 Pro. Depending on your personal taste. As for doing ACTUAL programming, most guys use a laptop computer with a J2534 lass through device for that. Yes, it can be done with a scan tool but it's easier with a proper computer. Either way, you'll still need a J2534 pass through box which are right around $1K by themselves (give or take) AND paid access to the vehicle manufacturer's tech site.

Otherwise, If you want to try something different.... The first AFFORDABLE scan tool with a WiFi VCI (instead of Bluetooth) is the XTOOL D7W. This will do pretty much everything you want to do (no actual programming) and it has a rock solid WiFi connection between the vehicle and the scan tool. I hear there is also a D8W version of this tool coming soon. (maybe already available)

All of the scan tools shown above are excellent options for the DIY guy.... or even professionals. XTOOl is a newer brand that hasn't been around nearly as long as Autel (Otofix) but they are trying hard to make a good product..... and they include 3 years of free updates. They have worked great in every vehicle that I've tried them in. Some people have reported having trouble on certain models but those are isolated incidents and it's possible the VEHICLE was the problem in those situations, and not the scan tool. But keep in mind, EVERY scan tool CAN struggle on certain makes/models. You need to filter out most of the comments and reviews from people who have no idea how to use these tools to begin with. And lastly, "updates" are NOT just once a year as new models of vehicles are released.... Updates come out on an almost daily bassis to fix software glitches, firmware glitches, make/model software updates to fix certain functions, etc.... Also, having a current subscription CAN be important when working on newer vehicles.... such as 2018+ Fiat/Chrysler vehicles that need a separate AutAuth account AND a current scan tool subscription in order to clear codes or have bidirectional control. The work around for this is the 12+8 cable but those can be a pain in the *** to use. Most of the time you need to disassemble half of the vehicle's interior to find the secure gateway module where the 12+8 cable plugs into. There are other vehicles that do NOT require AutoAuth buy still require a current scan tool subscription AND a cloud connection (via internet) in order to have full control with a scan tool. Am I saying that you NEED a current subscription. No. Absolutley not. But when most people say "I don't care about updates", that tells me they maybe don't realize that updates are far more than just new makes/models once per year. I like to explain why updates (and a current subscription) is important in modern times. If you plan to just work on older vehicles, then disregard everthing I just typed.... except now you know the real truth about updates and a current scan tool subscriptions. One last thing.... XTOOL does not have the ability (yet?) to work with AutoAuth so if you plan to work on 2018+ Fiat/Chrysler vehicles in the near future, you'll want an Autel, OTOFIX, or Launch..... I don't beleive any other import tools have AutoAuth capability.

Just my .02

Launch X431 PRO3S or Thinktool PROs are good options on that budget.

All of these Chinese tools are based on Launch or Autel software, I like Launch as the Hardware tends to be decent quality but Autel might be a bit more intuitive to use.

They have good coding and reset functions

My Launch does network Topology and is ADAS compatible (if you are planning to go that route)

For programming buy a good quality passthrough device ,a dedicated laptop and use the manufacturer portals (and use battery support)

Take a look at Pine Hollow Auto Diagnostics on YouTube, his reviews are always on the money and not sponsored nonsense 👍

The updates are where they get you.

The xtool A30 is one of the few bidirectional tools that has free lifetime updates.
