Hey guys,

I have been through a few broke screw spiral extractor sets, one from harbor freight which I didn't expect much of, just picked up a set today from pepboys by OEM, which was made in china, seemed a bit more rugged but I broke one of the extractors too.

I was looking at these

but I don't know if Irwin is any good in this field, plus the reviews show some people of broken theirs too.

is there any good set out there than does cost over $100 and is half decent at removing broken screws without breaking?

Mayhew makes an excellent USA made product. I have used their extractors, punches and pry bars. They are very well made.

My Snap On extractors are nice too. They are likely made by Mayhew but I don't know. They can all break with force but the cheap ones seem to break instantly. And often times you are stuck trying to remove the fastener AND the extractor. I good set is worth it. Same goes for drills, taps and dies.

I have had good luck with the few Erwin tools I have but in fairness I haven't had to use them often. I have the stud extractors from them.

I use the ryobi set that depot sells. Primarily I use them for stripped screws in steel door hinges. I do a lot of commercial work and we change the doors a lot which destroys the screws.

I too am looking for high quality USA made screw extractor set, preferably the square taper ones. So far I've found Wilde and Mayhew. They look pretty identical as well as their lineup (size wise), so I wonder if one of them make these extractors for other.

Wilde Screw Extractors

Mayhew Screw Extractors

BTW, the smallest extractor they make is for 1/4" bolt. Is there another USA manufacturer that make smaller ones than 1/4"?

The USA Irwin's are good, and that's what I have used. They have never let me down.

now to find out how to return the OEM **** to pepboys, I might be out of luck, OEM says it has a limited lifetime warranty and I can return it to the store purchased..
