Ok so I got a good compressor with enough CFM BUT it is portable and has a small tank on it. I'm using it in the shop and dont need it portable so I want something like a 60 or 80 gallon tank for it so it doesn't have to run every time I use the air tools or plasma cutter. What's a good source for one of these OR does anyone on here have an old compressor that the pump ***** but I can buy for just the tank in Cali?

How much is “enough” CFM? What is the duty cycle of the pump? Single/two stage?

If for example, if you have a small pump with an average duty cycle, a big tank is going to be hard on that compressor. In the same way, a big pump with a small tank is hard on motors. Small pump big tank combo will tax the pump a lot more when used within its CFM rating. A big pump on a small tank will tax the electric motor when used within its cfm range. There is generally a correlation between pump/motor size, and tank size for a reason. There is a sweet spot where you get the best out of both the pump and motor.

Nice thing about expansion tanks are that it’s another spot for water to drop out. Could be helpful for plasma cutting, depending on your current air treatment set up.

I've got a good ASME tank sitting out in the weeds and should advertise it on craigslist.

About once a month I see a "needs work" compressor unit for sale cheap. Just watch for a bit.

100% duty cycle on the pump and the compressor does 8 cfm and most i use is my plasma which is 6cfm required. It runs and will turn off but my air hammer or anything like that it makes the compressor run the second you pull the trigger on it. Before my 60 gallon tank would let it go for a few seconds before compressor turned on
