It's Good Times when your 11 piece Bonney double open-end metric wrench set arrives.

It's Bad Times when you open it to find only 8 pieces.

Here are the pics and the message I sent to the eBay seller:

Hello,

I received my set of Bonney wrenches today, thank you. However, I need to report a problem. Upon opening one end of the tube (I opened the end that had the blue wrench pouch sticking out from it) I laid all the wrenches on the table and saw there were only 8 instead of 11. I looked down inside the tube and saw the problem. Because there was so much empty space in that tube, and no padding of any kind, the wrenches had fallen out of the pouch during shipment. The force of them banging against the thin plastic cap on the one end of the tube cracked the cap quite good, and tore the piece of tape you had on that end. So, while the larger wrenches made it, three of the smaller sizes fell out. I have photos of the tube that I can send to your e-mil if you'd like proof, but I assure you that I am a 100% honest person. I can send the pics tonight if you would like to see them. Do you have any more of these wrenches, to replace the ones that are missing?

I hope he does, too. But I used a CC through Paypal, so I feel pretty safe.

Some people just don't give a rat's *** about packing. There is NO reason aside from laziness not to stuff the empty end of the tube with padding and then to use lots of tape on the endcaps.

Makes me feel DAMN good about how I ship all the tools I sell.

actually its 9 pieces if you cound that blue plastic holder thing

bob

I know that, Bob, but his auction called it an eleven piece set and pictured 11 wrenches, which is how many there are space for. But yes, you are correct.

I have had numerous Flat rate box issues lately and have gotten extremely lucky, I purchased some Mac ratchets from a Gj member and when the box arrived it had been completely mangled, the only thing that saved them from falling out was he taped them all up together and wrapped them in Bubble wrap otherwise they would have slipped thru the whole. I always double tape the seams on the flat rate stuff and even when i use bubble mailers i use packing tape on the ends, just in case it tears. I have come to the conclusion that the Post Office Workers are Pissed off... LOL

That kind of **** really pisses me off. There's no excuse but such sellers usually find one. I pack my stuff tight (some complain too tight). Padding and tape are cheap in comparison to the consequences of skimping. Sorry, Bull. I hope the seller makes good on the sale.

Many are yes. I've been to the back of many a post office and once worked for UPS. It's amazing any of us get our packages. I once shipped something for a UPS driver. He taped that box like crazy. He knew...

Krusty, that was the soundtrack in my head as I thought about the incident.

The seller responded to me right away. I got his e-mail address and just sent him the above pics. We'll see how he proceeds.

But, what should I even expect here? He will not have the wrenches that fell out to complete the set. Filing a UPS claim, UPS would just take the package and the wrenches away to investigate them, and of course I want the wrenches. Should I ask for a partial refund or something? What would you do?

Well it looks like you documented everything, Keep the packing, Ups has 100 automatic insurance against damage. I just dont know if it was actually Ups's fault or Piss poor packaging on the sellers part, Regardless i would definitely push for some compensation from either the seller or UPS.

I bought a set of Snap-on combos off ebay last month. Got them in a flat rate box with NO padding whatsover. When I was opening the beat-up box, I was sure I was going to be missing a few. Somehow they all stayed in though.
The wrenches were all just loose and banging around. Guy really went all out to keep a $650 (new price) set of wrenches safe

That *****, even the tool distributors do it, got a Lisle large transmission oil pan shipped in a very large box along with a Milton air gauge just thrown in, no packing, got beat to heck and broke the lever off, only thing I was dealing with new merchandise so they credited. I would have the seller pro rate the missing wrench's then just hope to find them elsewhere (maybe here) to replace them. Whats sad is whoever sweeps them off the floor won't know what quality they are and thrown in someones car trunk with Chi com junk to rust away a slow death.:(

Durn Bull, you're missing three of the four I'm missing. Only difference is mine were already missing when I found the rest of the set at the flea market.

I feel for you, I've been watching for the smaller ones for awhile, no joy yet....

You can almost certainly expect nothing but grief from UPS - they'll claim poor packaging on the shipper's part. Which it was actually.

I'd give the stupid goober no better than a neutral - and preferably a negative - stressing the shoddy and completely irresponsible packing, no matter how he "satisfies" you in the end. No excuse on this one - balled up newspaper to fill up the space and pad the ends costs a quarter, extra tape as well. On second thought, skip the neutral and nail the bozo on all counts - after you receive any satisfaction.

What was the bid and shipping, if you don't mind the asking? Maybe a link, so's I - and others - might avoid a similarly unpleasant buying experience.

Sometimes UPS does not collect small claims so if he files you might be able to keep the wrenches.

I think that UPS will DEFINITELY say that it was the packing and not their fault that this happened. I'd agree with them. Just normal jostling would have caused this...the wrenches banging around loose in the tube are hard and heavy, and the plastic end cap on the tube was very thin plastic. But maybe Deviler is right and the amount at stake is too small for UPS to investigate like that.

Some of you might remember the damaged T56 transmission I received over the summer. Based on that experience, I think UPS would come and take the package, find the seller at fault, and then it would be up to him to take care of me...him or my credit card company, that is.

Zrexxer, this seller had TWO of the exact same sets on eBay, each ending withing five minutes of the other. So maybe you were bidding against me or maybe you were in the other auction.

Powder, I'm kind of a softy...if he makes it right with me I don't know if I could leave him a negative. We'll see how this plays out.

That ***** Dave, the guy probably does not have more wrenches though. I had some problems last year, with the post office. I sent tools out in cylinders, with foam pading, and stapled and taped ends. A couple of people got tubes with missing tools, no padding, and staples removed and re-taped.:wtf: There are thieves in the postal service, and they cost me money, when I had to reimburse the customer for a job I did right, bummer on both sides if this is a similar case. The wrenches were rolled up in the pouch, not loose, I could just see some postal guy plucking what he needs, those tubes are hand processed so, anything falling out would be noticed.:(

Oh! UPS, I used to work in the Shrewsbury hub in college. UPS could break an anvil with their handling, enough said, and yes, people steal what falls out of packages at UPS, they go into a lost box for awhile before they get given away, of thrown out, etc.........UPS breaks alot of things.

I was watching those sets but didn't bid. The seller should make good on that shoddy packaging job.
How long does it take to stuff the ends of the tube. Ingorance is bliss, I guess.
Good luck Bull

He should'a tie wrapped them into place!

Seriously. I adopted that practice after receiving some items from you. I just shipped 1 ratchet and five wrenches to a member here. I cut a piece of thick cardboard to fit inside the padded bubble mailer. Then I laid out all the tools and marked holes for two zip ties for each tool. Punched out the holes, then put the tools in place one by once and cinched them up with the zip ties. Took me a good twenty minutes to do it all, but I feel like I am doing the best job I can.

Ultimately the seller is at fault here for such shoddy packaging. I have packed $2.00 CDs with more care. He'll probably file with UPS, hopefully that works out if not just file against him.

I'm glad you're not out to screw someone, but it would be very helpful to other buyers to know about the packaging problem.

Also, I'm not sure how he'd define "make it right"...I had a similar situation where 1 item in a set was bad, and the seller seemed to think that the value of that item was "total cost of auction divided by number of items in auction". But that's not true in many/most cases b/c it's such a hassle to find replacements. Some may say I'm crazy, but I think you're due at least a 50% refund. Or, if he wants to refund everything including S&H both ways, that's another reasonable option.

Good luck, I know how frustrating this situation is, especially on a hard to find item like a Bonney set :(

Well, after I e-mailed him the pics, here was his reply:

"Dave I just hope this is not fabricated.
Anyway send me the sizes ur missing.
and ill make sure u get them back."

And here is what I just wrote back a minute ago:

"Hi Michael,

I can understand your concern about this being a fabrication. The world is full of dirtbag liars and cheats. I myself don't trust anyone unless they've earned it. However, I can assure you that I was raised according to the old values of honesty and integrity. I am 100% telling and showing you the truth. That tube arrived in the condition shown in the pics, and with three wrenches missing. It's not hard to believe...with no padding material in the empty end of the tube, those heavy wrenches must have been slamming into that thin plastic cap with a lot of force.

Anyway, I will go down to the basement in the morning and write down what sizes are missing. What will you replace them with? Do you have access to other Bonney wrenches of the same style to fill out the set? I would not want to mix and match with different styles, you know?

Thanks for your quick communication to this point.

Dave"

That would be great if he had the missing ones.

It would, but earlier today he told me that he had sold the other set that he had and so DIDN'T have any replacements. That's why I am pointing out to him that I don't want just any wrench thrown at me to fill these gaps.
