I did a search and I can't find any thread on a "good" transmission jack. I'm debating between an upright and a floor jack. I don't want to spend thousands, but I do need something that will handle a Ford Excursion transmission. Please, no made in China stuff. I don't care if I gotta spend more money and get something that is made in the USA.

Thanks.

Well the main difference between the Upright and Floor model depends on how you intend on removing the Transmission, If you intend on using a lift you are gonna more than likely want a Upright but can be done with either of course with the lift only difference being how much head room you will have. Are you intending on Repairing Transmissions or is this just a 1 time personal vehicle thing? If this is gonna be a profession i would recomend the Hein Werner upright line but it is very expensive, Roughly 1700 bucks for there 1 ton model. If this is gonna be a 1 or 2 time ordeal i would honestly stick with one of the cheaper taiwan models. You can pick them up for less than a couple hundered bucks. Yeah its taiwan but so is Prolly 90 percent of the jacks being used in the U.S today. The american made floor models are just as pricey and you have to be on the ground to work with it, Since you was debating the 2 i assume you have access to a lift. Go with the upright you will much happier.

I did a little searching via ebay and found the following link to be worth the money and the good thing about this lift it is rebuildable, parts wise. It is a 1 ton jack which is the heavier of the 2 models. It is Older, But quality and taiwan priced. Its missing one L bracket. (could be made, prolly bought). Not sure where you are located but worth a look, He says it holds a load but leaks around the pump, the pump packing is worn and the pump is also prolly allowing a little oil bypass but both are easy fixes. Check it out.

Thanks for the input. I do have a lift, but I'll be doing this off and on rebuilding race cars and restoration jobs. Not so much professionally, but as an intense hobby that will pay for itself. If that makes senes.

I have the 'china' one from Northern tool. I've used it for a 700 r4 in the Suburban and a couple of fuel tank r&r for the pump. These are 40 gal tanks so I'd say they were 200-300 lbs. Not sure of the trans weight. Paid $149 or so and I think I already got my money out of it. It is the floor type. Torrin, I think.

If I was planning on doing a lot of ******'s I would find a top quality used transmission jack.

Less than a lot I'd buy the HF transmission jack.

One or two I'd buy the HF transmission adapter and use a floor jack. Main reason is space, the adapter can sit on a shelf when I don't need it, any of the real jacks will take up a bunch of floor space.

I'd find a good quality used Snap-on or OTC... there are other brands, too.

My biz partner had a Chi-Com one for his shop and it lasted a couple years in regular use. Now he has a Snappy and he likes it better 'cuz the adaptor plate is better and the hydraulics are much smoother.

I made an adapter for my floor jack. At the time I only did rear wheel drive. Used it for 30+ years.

Installed a lift. I strongly recommend the trans jack from Northern Tool. I know several who use one and they recommended it to me. The problem it's China made.
