Good triple square sockets to own

I currently don't own any triple square sockets partially because I never worked on anything that required them. I see that the bigger sizes are used on axle bolts on vw's and such. I don't see myself doing anything axle related on a vw anytime soon.
What else is triple square used on or what is a common size or two of them for other applications?
I may pick up one or two the next time I see my snap on man just so I have them Incase I run into a some on a side job.

I bought a 08 Passat wagon 2.0t and knowing I will eventually have to do work on the car I bought nieko short and long set...bare in mind I was purely going off reviews and it was a toss up between them and vim..I chose neiko for more pieces and since I would rarely use them it seemed OK to me

Neiko? Hmm never even heard of them. Where'd they come from?
I wanna know if it's smaller sizes for brakes or what. Also is it just a vw/Audi that uses them?
Need a triple square expert to chime in!

I have that set and no it is not every size you will ever need, just the most common.

No brakes use Metric hex, smaller sizes are used on and around the engine, along with metric hex, so fun stuff to work on. CV axles and wheel bearings are the most common sizes needed but the vary and honestly I do not remember the numbers for my most used sizes.

I have a 4 piece SK set. I also have all of the XZN sizes that Zephyr makes in 1/4-5/16 hex bit format. I've owned 4 VWs over the years, and I think I've only used 3 sizes. I liked A2s though, so I've no idea what they're using now.

Neiko is a Chinese company that exploded on Ebay some time back. Now they're all over the place.

They tend to be found in head bolts, axles, pressure plate/flywheel, etc. Sometimes in odd locations like how Porsche (I think) uses them to secure the alternator. I believe all the German companies use them here and there.

I've seen the triple square bolts mostly used on VW and some BMW's in various areas-axles ,headbolts, manifold bolts etc. I have a set of triple squares from Lisle, I don't remember them costing and arm and leg and they're fine. For me that's a once in a blue moon tool so I don't see the need for an expensive set.

They're only used on German stuff. I refused to buy tools for German cars, as I hate working on them.

Don't waste your money if you don't plan on messing with German stuff. Or just make the shop buy them as a shop tool, similar to Honda crank pulley tool etc.

They put them all over the place in german cars. Random places, motor parts, suspension parts, door parts, rear axles, etc. Just wait until you get a tamper proof triple square fastener! VIM's are incredibly good and inexpensive.

Hazet makes the best ones, Snapon I've heard of being brittle and breaking, VIM is good.

Neiko is like Harbor Freight without all the stores, same junk, same non junk, but branded Neiko.

I am also in the market for a good set. I previously owned the more common larger sizes for German axles and similar repairs. Recently I've noticed the smaller sizes (4-6?) showing up on some VW engine fasteners. Sometimes I've been successful with jamming a Torx in there but just as often not. I would say that if you buy a set make sure it has the smaller sizes as well. That is what I will be doing.

The blue point triple square set is durable and a good price. One of the sizes is a tamper proof style and works on some transmission fill plugs that I've encountered.

You need 8,10, and 12 at least. Snap on has a description of the uses for each. Needed one to replace the starter on my 86 Jetta. They hold in the half shafts in vw, Audi, Porsche. Need one for some VW seats. I think I've seen them one break calipers. I think VAG uses them in high torque applications. Little chance of using cheap tools or torx and being successful.

In my opinion, these specialty bit sockets are not a good place to skimp. You really only get the one chance with these fasteners. I have Snap On.

Watch out for Chinese made versions. Asian manufacturers use a fastener that looks almost identical to a triple square. It's called a bi hex I think. The corners are 120 degrees instead of 90. Beware of stuff called spline something. You need to know if it is triple square or not.

One more thing I know SO is crazy expensive, tho I've had good luck on ebay. Bought a set of 5 in 1/2 drive for $120 like new. In my mind at least, if I can complete a repair instead of sending my car into a dealer or even an Indy, I just saved the cost of that tool in one job. At least with German cars, or older German cars, I think I could easily justify the few thousand dollars I've spent on tools.

As I've gotten older, I've worked on my cars less. Either cars have gotten better, or I can now afford better cars. But I'm getting ready to work on my kids cars. I think I could probably justify getting a lift and maybe even a good scanner. Even brake jobs are so expensive now. And I trust shops less than ever. I think some take advantage of people who know nothing about cars.

My advice is to avoid a $40 set from Vim. For less than $100 more you can get Snap On, or if you prefer hazet get those. But get the best quality as they will pay for themselves.

I guess I personally don't think Chinese tools make good economic sense. If you are going to work on cars on your own time, get the best tools you can.

Not a VW, AUDI, or Porsche (I wish) guy. My only encounter with these was BBS wheels on a SAAAB 9-5 . They use them on fasteners (21 of them!) for their 2 piece RK II wheels. They are proprietary fasteners (BBS does not/will not sell them), because they do not want people taking their wheels apart. I needed to get these wheels powdercoated, and separate barrels from spokes. I bought the bits (long and short) at a tool store, and SK was my choice. You need high quality bit , as a previous posted cited, you don't want to mess these up. These are the male bits, which fit into female bolts, not female sockets that fit onto male bolt heads. Never have seen those.

I've got Genius Brand triple squares, and I'm very happy with them. Use them often.

Yeah, half-shafts and door hardware on the P-cars.
Also belt pulley on the 911- here you'd need a shorty (blue-point).
I bought the 4-piece SK a long long time ago and they are holding up well to heavy weekender use.

Battery on VW Touareg and Porsche Cayenne is under driver's seat.
You need to remove two triple square bolt to gain access to batt.

I have VIM set. Used few times, so far so good.

If you are going to work on German manufactured stuff you are going to end up running into these type fasteners. I have seen them on large diesel engines and I have owned a few German cars over the years. The VIM quality seems to be good. I broke a Snap-On on the head bolts of a diesel engine once, so I not sure that they are any better.

No idea if they're good or not, an actually no idea who even made them (except the L wrench one; that's a Facom) but these are my triple squares

25zkwee.jpg

The Facom L wrench is an 8 (both ends), the two loose ones are 6 and 8, and the long one is a 10, then the set in the red plastic are 5, 6, 8, 10, 12 and 14. All are 10mm hex shanks (inc the two loose and the long one above) and the holder is 3/8 (but of course they'd fit in any 10mm socket, so can work on 1/4, 3/8 and 1/2")

As you can see, I've never even used the ones in the set. Don't think I've used the Facom either. Or the long 10. Might have used the 6 and 8 loose ones though...

My Pace American enclosed trailer has certain exterior trim attached with
zinc plated triple square self drilling fasteners. The zinc plating has degraded
and I'd like to replace with new.

Anybody know source of misc triple square fasteners. They are not easy to find
