So after burning the bejesus out of my finger today when a drop of slag hit my glove and melted through to skin, I realized I need some proper gloves. So, suggestions anyone? I'd prefer something that gives the dexterity of a mechanics glove over the traditional long gloves. US made would be nice too (probably a pipe dream.) Thanks all.

Miller sells quite a few different styles [imported-very affordable] but they're all hide gloves. I've never seen otherwise in a purpose made welding glove as anything with great finger dexterity would mean thin material which you dont want around weld slag as you found out.

I suppose you could try some basic hide work gloves.

It could just be the hide ones I have are absurdly clunky compared to others. I'll check out the Miller stuff. :)

The Mechanix Fabricator is a pretty decent welding glove. Not super heavy, short, but keeps the slag off. Tillman makes some good tig gloves that are really light weight but keep you from getting burns.

Keep in mind that light weight welding gloves go to hell faster than heavy ones.

X2 for recomending the tillman's. I have two pairs of tillmans, the lightweight tig which is great for flat welding and the heavier mig gloves which I use for everything from torching to grinding to welding. Still has plenty of dexterity to them.

X3 or Tillman, I have 3 different kinds from TIG to thick cutting ones. If I can get away with the thin ones I do, but at times you have to use the thick ones or protection.

Im a Ironworker and weld stick all day long. Tillman elk skin gets my vote! They are very supple and stay soft for a long time, work great for mig also. Elk skin is the way to go.

for most of the welding i do anymore i wear a tig glove or a good old fashioned leather work glove.

neither last as long, or as heat resistant as a "proper" pair of welding gloves.

i really hate wearing a heavy welding glove on my gun hand.

The elkskin gloves with kevlar stitching have an unbelievable amount of dexterity. I have a pair that I believe are from BSX but I think many companies sell pretty much the same thing. I recommend trying them on before you buy them if you can in order to get the best fit possible, for maximum dexterity you want them to fit pretty snug.
