Goodell & Pratt ? Hand drill

Found this yesterday. It's really hard to read the name but I think it says goodell and Pratt. It's made in Massachusetts if I read it right. Anyone know anything about it?

You don't use it with normal drill bits? I did notice the chuck only has 2 jaws. What is the selector for above the chuck?

Cool never knew it was called a brace. Always assumed it was just called a hand drill.

Goodell Pratt was one of the big names in tools of all kinds. Hard to believe anyone with any interest in tools has never heard of them.

The term is auger bit - Not brace bit.

The selector is to reverse the ratcheting action to back the drill out of the hole. Those used to be the only way to drill a hole except hand augers, the kind with a wooden "T" bar made on the end. They also make a really weird one that was made to drill next to wall with zero clearance. Those date back about 100 years or so.

Here is a pic of a Goodell-Pratt push drill along with one by Miller's Falls and several Blue-Point screwdrivers that hold a screw until you start to turn it.The push drills came with all 8 bits for 75 cents apiece. They are good for drilling soft material such as wood plastic and aluminum;don't work well on steel.

The red handled one is known as the "Buck Rogers" model, made later in the time line when many of the tools were redesigned with red plastic handles.
