18 years old 3 ton single stage unit, a/c was running and all of a sudden I’m outside and all I hear is a whining noise fan isn’t running but smells bad like something is overheating or burning turned it off for about 20 minutes at the panel...turn back on same thing , cooling fan turns freely, capacitor looks ok not swollen...
Any idea where to look? Don’t want to call and pay emergency call, I have PTAC in the sunroom fan blowing cool air in the house, gonna get a small window unit for the master which I’ve been wanting for hurricane season anyway...

If you've never had the fan motor replaced, that could be it, 18 years is a long time. I had one burn up like that on a Goodman heat pump about 15 years ago. Need to replace the capacitor if you change the fan motor...but, really you need a tech, unless you are like me with a new fan motor, capacitor, and contactor waiting for the day that they are needed.

Everything is running good after 3 days, put the window unit back in the box for another day..$5000 for a Trane single stage 15 Seer unit... were gonna use this old girl until she can’t pump no more...
Still gonna get it serviced this summer, get the coils cleaned good and checked out.

Fan motor get overheated?

The fan motor in our central A/C went out after 15-16 years. $300 and an afternoon adapting a universal fan motor got us cool again.

Coil cleaning is fairly easy. Couple cans of cleaner, a hose, and 30 minutes. Now if the coils are packed with grass or other plant detritus, taking the case off is a bit more involved.

By the time I buy the coil cleaner and meds to get of the pain in the *** of doing it, I would rather pay $150 to let somebody do it the right way...lol, I’ll have a glass of whiskey.
