Does anyone know what their intended use is?
Interesting that the lower jaw is so much narrower.
Made in Taiwan from an alloy of similar hardness to a nice, aged Parmesan.

jar opener?
I feel like you're on the right track. Given how it can be adjusted pretty small, caps too, not just jars. Maybe try it out the next time your glue bottle or fiberglass resin cap is bonded in place.

It looks a lot like a pan or pot lifter / holder. The only reason I don't think it is, is because of the pivot adjustment. Pans are universally thin (perhaps with a rim).

When I saw it my first thought was general purpose kitchen tool and I want one. Not just jars, but anything hot. That extra hook means you can hook it over a drawer while you work.

My wife has a similar one for opening jars. From your description, used to open these jars? :)
