I've been looking for an old vise to put in my pole barn that I'm going to build this summer. My dad called me yesterday and said he got a vise for me. He told me it was a Craftsman with 4" jaws. My first thought was it has to be a newer style "china" made. When I went to his house I was surprised to see it was an old vise. Sweet! It's a model 5162. It's stamped "428" in two spots and from what I read it would be made in 1942? This vise looks like it had very little use over the years. There's no slop, no dings, saw marks or anything on it and the teeth on the jaws are still pointed and not flattened at all. Should I restore it or just get the surface rust off and call it good. It's my first vise and I will pass it on down to one of my boys when I pass. My dad got this vise from friend who collects everything old from auctions. My dad said he had a shed floor full of old vises and there had to be over 100 of them in a pile. I just might have go to his house sometime and pick up another 1 or 20 lol. When I go there I'll take a picture of the pile.

You sir definitely have a keeper there. it's a Craftsman vise made by Rock Island vise company. also the date stamp you saw is more likely 4 (April) 28 (1928) because all my Craftsman vises are stamped with the month and year following. probably is one of the first Craftsman vises Sears (or the original Sears company's name) sold.

as far as cleaning it up just take it apart and if it all comes apart fairly easily you can wire wheel all the paint off (use a mask because it is lead based paint) or if you know how put in an Electrolysis tank (there is a good thread in this section of GJ showing you how if you want to learn). then grease with your favorite one, mount it and use it. feel free to post any questions on here or PM me or one of the others with a similar vise on the vise thread and we'll be glad to help.

also please let us know the name and phone # of the nice old guy with 100 vises sitting on his barn's floor so we can go take a gander. or grab us pictures and post here or on the vise thread because you can't have too many pictures on GJ.

Nice find and a great Dad. good luck.
