Howdy!

Been a long time lurker. I learn a lot from you guys and girls. But youve also caused me to spend lots of money on things I didnt think I needed until I got them.

Anyways my newest acquisition was a stainless steel two tub restaurant sink. Paid $20 for it. Lady wanted $50. I said Id take a chance on it for $20.

So I think its a good deal but It needs some new welds and a good cleaning. After I got it home, I called a few welding shops and they told me it wasnt worth welding, sight unseen. I find this hard to believe. Its maybe 15 inches of weld in a few spots. One welder told me stainless needed to be in a enviormently controled room with special gases to keep the weld clean. I know this isnt true.

Long story short, can someone give me a quick guesstimate on how much it might cost to get it welded up.

Also what would be a good way to clean it up? Maybe a stainless wire wheel on an angle grinder? Some sand paper? Any tips?

Most places around here want a min of $45 to fire up their tig machines, and are 60+ per hr. YMMV You do need a controlled environment for the weld, and it is protected by an inert gas.

That's low grade stainless. Since its already rusted I would just mig it and be done. I don't think it is worth finding a tig weldor because it is rusted already. You could even stick weld it and be done.

Why does it need welding? Does it look like it will leak? Use some JB Weld epoxy.

On welding SS: environmentally controlled room = no wind.
Special gasses = argon, which if not combined with helium ain't all that special.

You can find all kinds of weldors on CL.

BTW, that's what got me into welding. I had a small job 10 years ago that I needed done. I called welding services and told them I would pay the 2 hour min to get 6" of welding done on a steering bracket. I got treated like a pile of dog ****, so I went out and bought an AC buzz box and did it myself.

Then I went to welding school. I'm not the best, but things don't break and I don't have to put up with haughty *** weldors.

Yeah it will leak. It has some broken welds. It would be an easy weld for someone with a TIG but Zeke your right, these guys dont want my money. Must be nice to turn away business. I was trying to avoid the JB weld but hell its a garage sink. As long as it holds water and doesn't look TO bad.

Whats a good way to get some of that surface rust off? That one side will be visible.

I think I would have passed on $20.00. My first clue to run would be rusting stainless the second broken welds. and last but not least add $30.00 to it and you probably could find a good quality 2 bay stainless sink turn key ready to use

You might want to look into waterweld from a parts store. This stuff is incredible and we have used it on aluminum high dollar radiators for late model race cars and never had a problem,. Heck I sealed a leak in my ATV fuel tank with 3 years ago and still no sign of a problem. Easier to use then epoxy, less messy, like working with playdoh.

Scotch brite on a disk. If you lived near me I would fix it just to d&ck around with it and make it hold water with my TIG unit.
