Got a Quincy!

Ok, so I ended up getting this gas compressor for........$55. But the joke may be on me, I bid on this through a online auction; when it came to picking up the compressor it took a forklift! (in my head, looking at the original photos, what looks to be 4"x4" wood base is actually railroad ties.)

This thing is HUGE. I am looking to get some more info on this compressor head and the entire set up if you know anything about it.

What I know:
Quincy brand is molded into one of the smaller pieces connecting to the the head. Badge on compressor reads 240-3

Mfg date on the gas tank is 1961. Im assuming this was a complete unit?

The flywheel turns smoothly but there is a loud knock in the gas motor on every rotation. Broken rod perhaps? Suggested- Magneto making noise

I just want the compressor head, so lets focus mostly on that.

There is a formula for determining what HP electric motor you use to replace a certain HP gas motor. I cant find it but I'm sure someone else here will have better luck or remember the formula.
You may need to modify the unloader setup. Not too familiar with gas compressors but I know they run constantly. Not sure if the safety blowoff vents the excess pressure or if they use some other type of system.
I used a combination check/unloader valve like these on my compressor when the pressure switch mounted unloader broke. It works great and is very simple to install between the pump and the tank.

Engine looks to be a Wisconsin. The loud knock/clatter noise is the impulse coupling for the magneto. Perfectly normal.

A_P posted the link to the general specs. I use to have a model 230, same as the 240, but with different heads. I have a PDF of the manual and HP vs CFM vs RPM chart. PM me and I can send it to your email address if you want it.

A TRUE 5hp will run that compressor nicely. It is a single stage, so your cutoff is going to need to be @~105psi, but it puts out ~20CFM. Just a heads up, you will need to change the hydraulic unloader setup for it to run on an electric motor, compared to the continuous run on the gas motor. The manual gives specifics on this. A soft rebuild kit is ~$80 that includes all of the gaskets and unloader diaphragms.

According to that chart you need a minimum of 3 HP. 5 HP would be better.

Yes, you will need some kind of shut off. For $55 you can drop a couple of hundred more on a motor and plumbing and be way ahead with that beast.

Worth a tinker or 2, I really would be tempted to keep this a gasser (gasp) as its set for it, got the head unloaders already on etc. If the engine flew it would be a plus but scoring something else more modern wouldnt be terrible in this case.

For a common garage I would be swayed by a modern vert tank I could hang a padded curtain around or in front of, pipe the intake out, put synth oil in, pipe a drain thru the wall with ball valve, forget it about it, on occasion drain tank a pinch. Space requirements small.

I have the same in my service truck but haver a Kaw Liq on instead of this BS in the pic but have air solonoid to the throttle linkage, yes it unloads ther head and throttles down at same time. I can barely hear it running.

Its to the right of the welder, I had it connected to truck tank at one time but tjhionk now its on welder and they share the same battery. I was looking fort pic of air plumbing.

Good suggestion. Clean it up. Change the oil on both and run it. In the mean time start shopping CL for a 5HP motor.

You might get lucky and find a vertical tank cheap also !

Again, I love the help and suggestions guys. Im a little out of my league when it comes to the internals of a full size compressor like this.

My shop is a 40' hi cube shipping container, meaning I only have 320 square feet of foot print space.

So my initial thoughts on this would be to build a small shed on top of the container, mount the compressor+motor on a pad and put a horizontal tank up top or on the ground outside of the container. Plumb the air through the wall.

And yes, im definitely on the hunt for a quality 5hp motor (1ph) and 60-100 gallon tank.

Good catch! Farmall is right, that engine might have a magneto on it, which could explain the knock you're hearing.

Fix it, trade it for another one ideal. In good running order I bet the deal would be easy. I can get spun off where my first inclination is to save and build but in todays world should really operate a bit more on buy sell trade. You can get real deals on good used where you are not really just buying someones problems.

I never seen one worn out except for a couple body shops and old age, some units broke but I dont know any home hobby types that paid as low as 4 or 500 for an upright cheap 60 deal ever wore one out.

One of those 5 hp 2 stage units from some store are nice, about a grand and will go a lifetime and they make a lot of air. I got air on 24/7, with a little storage a 3 hp does 99.5 without a second thought. The thing cost about 1400 in 1970 ha and now you can buy one makes 1/3 rd more easy for same or less money, 45 yrs later. Its not quite as good of unit maybe, mabe not but **** they work just fine.

If its all a hobby then it doesnt matter. You can save some money, you can have some work, get the same thing from fixing up a relic.

930dreamer, you my friend are a Craigslist scourer like myself. Its a daily routine for me, ive watched your post in the "Hot Deals" section. I was born and raised in Albq, NM but now in Denver. I will check Albq CL just in case sometimes.

Im planning on disassembling the 3 parts tomorrow. Pump, engine, tank. We will see if its even possible to move the pump with the stuff I have on hand (dolly, left arm +right arm, stupidity).

Don't hurt yourself now. It's one heavy pump and one the main reason why Champion pumps are much better because they're about 100lbs lighter.
