My brother got this from a freind who was going to scrap it. It's a Walworth and it looks like it has a number 1 stamped into it. When you loosen the jaws on it, you have to manually pull it apart. Is it supposed to be like that? Also, what was this type of vice used for? It only has one hole on the bottom center for mounting.

Than looks like a decent vise for a smaller lightweight unit.

Get the main screw and Dynamic jaw completely out and look on the Screw for either a hole for a cotter key, an groove for a snap or crimp ring or you can probably use a shaft collar if there is room. All but the latter will need a washer/spacer so you are not rubbing directly on the retainer/keeper.

I'm glad it was saved from the scrap yard. I scrap metal myself, but I can't understand why people scrap things (like this vise) that they could sell for a lot more on craigslist.

That one deserves a special table/stand made especially for it. With only the one hole in the base, it could be made to swivel around 360 deg to get just the right angle for a job.
