Got Dad's old toolboxes today

Been waiting a few years but Dad was finally ready to part with his old boxes that have sat in his shed for years. Got them for my 2 sons to have as they grow up. Got a mac top/bottom with small cabinet, I believe is from the 80's. He also had a Remline top with a yorktown bottom that he said he bought new in '72 or '73. As of now the mac setup is going to stay the way it is since it is good shape. The Remline/yorktown is going to be repainted. My little guy wants to paint it blue but I'm not sure about that yet

That's great that you were able to get your father's tool boxes. I have alot of those same stickers on my old boxes. My wife asked me why I was turning my computer on its side and I explained that I wanted to see what the boxes looked like. Good luck with the restoration.

I wouldn't paint them . Just clean them up and lube the tracks.

Don't paint them. They look great, tear them apart, spray nine them, give the rails a lube, wax them polish them, and get rid of those stickers.

They look great....but if they are the same width, why not swap tops. I think they would look better if the tops were swapped to the other bottoms. JMO,

got my dads boxes when he passed... use the tools in them all the time... when he was talking about his will, i said im not greedy, i just want your tools... had to drive a uhaul full of them from new hampshire to miami, but im glad i did

Clean em up, wax them down, lube the slides, and leave the stickers. They were put on there by your dad who enjoyed them and so should you.

I bought that model roller cab in about 1978 ? Looks like dad was a hotrod guy. All of those were popular add on brands back then.Mac was real popular back then too.The SO-Mac battle was far more head to head than today.

How did you make out with the rem line project. I just got my grandfathers remline rolling toolbox. I'm planning on refinishing it for my father.

Agreed, I'd swap those tops around. I have a middle 3 drawer add on that matches the aluminum handle box. Gave it to my son, but he's already claimed all my tools when I'm either too old to use them or die. Which ever comes first. Youngest son is enrolled at tech for auto mechanics, so we're buying his now.

Nice boxes! Here's my great uncles 1967'Remline set I got from him. I say don't paint it! I buffed mine with compound and then wax, added a new top mat and liners. I like the patina of the old orange and gray box.

What a great legacy your great uncle left you ( I am assuming in his will ?) . I am sure he would be proud of the way you have remembered him through the consideration and thought you gave in preserving the original boxes and totally agree with your thoughts on this. I will be pleased if my kids at least use my toolboxes to rest their surfboard on rather than throw them out .... seriously !!

personally , and YMMV , I would keep the original colour ( repaint) , but if that is not acceptable , then match the MAC setup ? I love blue and have most of my newer boxes in ORIGINAL blue as I bought them that way , But I have older boxes in various colors and I plan to keep them original. Not my call , I reluctantly accept that...

And put a pack of ZigZag rolling papers and a hemostat in that top left drawer to maintain its authenticity. I got a shiver looking at those....

Yeah, the Remline needs a repaint. I say go with the kid as he is the owner. You can preserve the stickers but the box would look better painted and the kid will feel more like an owner if he can pick the color.

I began the summer repainting a 30+yo dollhouse I made. It was originally for my daughter and was blue. But the new owner, my granddaughter, wanted brick red. I sucked it up and withheld my opinion. I gave her a paint color wheel and she picked out the shade she wanted. Guess what--the brick red looks great and she is happy. Interest is renewed and BOTH of them are enjoying it now.

Like every other project not enough time. Both boxes still the way I got them just cleaned up and organized. My son is turning the rem-line into half toy box for his matchbox but keeping some tools in it.

Vintage Remline boxes are great - I have the top box similar to your Dad's - drawer layout a bit different but same size.
