Got me a Genny

Friend of friend had this Ridgid Brand Genny up for a moving sale, was selling the late parent's house. Barely been used at all, really clean looking was stored in a wood framed garden shed, so I bit the bullet and took for about 1/3 the price what they cost new about 3-4 years ago.

Thought that was pretty good deal and figured the savings will maybe offset a direct feed panel if that's what I want to do down the road. Lengthy power outages (days) around here are fairly rare but do happen. 3 days was my last one about 8 years ago maybe. But only 3 hrs the other day


Fuel tank was clean and dry no old gas in it

Charging up the little battery for the electric start now will see if that's still good.

Didn't have any manual with it, but ManualsLIB has one online. Perusing it its pretty generic though.

Make sure it runs.......... the gas may be gone but the plant life left in the bowl won’t be unless he ran it dry. Since it is so simple to do drop the bowl and spray it with carb cleaner. If it has dried funk get it all outa there lest it later break off/up and jam your needle.
Always always ALWAYS STORE THOSE CARB BOWLS DRY. Shut off the gas and let it stumble and croak on it’s own. We’re messing with a guys outboard right now due to ****** in the bowl. Ran like a champ but kept leaking gas all over. Tried Seafoam then took bowl off to find dried flaky crud all over the bottom and some jamming the needle open. I wouldn’t use ethanol in that either if it’s going to sit. Get real gas and change it once a year.....Also run it 10 minutes a couple times a year so you know it’ll work if really needed.

Run the hell out of it prior to needing it. That old gas can come off parts in the fuel system when its soaked in new gas. Fill her up and let it sit for a few days. Then run it all out.

I recently bought a generator with s steel tank that I i assume was E10 fuel so it attracted water. The bottom of the tank and parts on the top where black goo and rust. I was able to clean the tank and the cab was actually clean when i took it apart. Leaving it full and it taking a ride in my truck shook stuff loose still.

Ya fuel treatment is a must. I swear by the Startron and its sold down at the motorcycle shop I spend my time at. Been using it for years now.

I always run my equipment occasionally when not in steady use something like my gasoline water pump sits unused alot now since I got the M18 water transfer pump.

Will update a bit later on the genny haven't much free time to spend over the weekend with work and all.

Curious about oil viscosity and spark plug # for that Yamaha engine

I have a generator with the MZ300 engine. The owner’s manual is the same. Some of the parts ( muffler) will be different since it has been installed in a generator.

I find it hard to find parts for locally and on the web. Currently I need a carb bowl gasket and it’s leaking oil from the main gasket which doesn’t look too easy to change.

Not trying to hijack topic, so my apologies, but speaking of outboards, we have a couple that've been sitting in our garage storage area for approx 15~20 years. How bad would they likely be after all that time? Would they be worth trying to rehab? If so, is a 50 gal drum, with clamp boards added and filled with water still the typ way to run 'em while working on them? Many thanks for any advice or suggestions.

FYI: Starton MIGHT be a stabilizer but don't expect it to dissolve or clean a dirty carb. I did a bench test with the marine grade startron against seafoam with 15-20yr old 2 stroke gas/oil mix. It was like tar and smelled like shellac. Seafoam melted it to liquid in less than an hour. Startron did nothing and I let it sit weeks to see if it was just slower.

Best thing to do with ANY generator is "exercise" it, at least a couple of times a year. If it has a 240V outlet, put a 240V load on it. At least 10-15 minutes, 30+ would be better.

When it is time to shutdown, disconnect the load and run off the fuel and let the bowl run dry.

If you are like me, you will never run it long enough to drain the tank. Every couple of years, drain the old gas, fill about 1/2 way with fuel and stabilizer. (Mix the old gas with what is in your car/truck, a gallon or so at a time. Put a clean rag in the funnel to catch any chunks.) Despite what thousands of people will tell you, E10 is fine as long as you run the carburetor dry each time.

I have one of these for flushing motor after saltwater use. Most guys use this on older motors. Some newer motors have built in hose connection for flushing motor.

I have one of these for flushing motor after saltwater use. Most guys use this on older motors. Some newer motors have built in hose connection for flushing motor.

Thanks for sharing, as that's interesting; I hadn't seen one of those before.

But while working on an outboard, or trying to get one running &c, isn't it better to have the drive submersed in a tank, and to have drag on the prop? Or no? Or is that not preferred? Many thanks ;-)

So got the genny started up and ran it for a while late this afternoon. Battery was just fine after trickle charging and cranked over easily after fueling up with fresh gasoiine (and using StarTron). Motor oil was still like new and hr meter showed only 1hr of use. Put load on with my 15amp air compressor and an electric drill to watch the peak wattage use per the built in power gauge about 750 altogether

We sold our Generac when we moved, (shouldn't have :~\ ), hence have been mulling over getting another genny.
It's interesting to see the Rigid, as I haven't seen big ones in HD.
