boy, say anything less than a glowing review of a dual 80 and people really get their ******* in a bunch.

i much prefer my gearwrench/armstrong ratchets in 60, 88 and 120 tooth count. i have 8 of them in 1/4, 3/8 and 1/2 drives. my dual 80 barely ever makes an appearance in the rotation.

imop, the dual 80 is over rated by those that think anything marked snap-on is better.

if the dual 80 is so good, how come so many people are always trying to sell them? :spit:

Exactly! I don't get what the hype is about the dual 80 series, probably just because it's made by snappy people think it is the absolute best. My favorite ratchets are my basic Koken 24 teeth - add some lube and you'll get the smoothest ratcheting action ever.

lol..... I like 'em all. SO, GW, and Armstrong. But the 1/2" 80s really do feel much better. The 3/8" 120xp is awesome. SO 1/4" is awesome. But I even think it's splitting hairs. I just can't believe I used CMan for so long. If only I knew then what I know now.

Those composite ratchets are nice. I was at HF and for some reason I wouldn't come off any money but i regret not getting the 3/8.

Why do you have three HF 24" breaker bars?

how do you like the SHLF80A (?) ?
I've been considering getting one but unsure how if like the flex head with such a long handle, especially on bigger bolts.

Truthfully, 2 things. One, you don't use it as often as you want/wish. Usually if the SHF80 is there you just Cowboy The F Up and make it happen before walking back to the box to grab the big dog. And two, I think if it locked like the Armstrongs it would kick a lot more ***. But I tightened mine to the max, and you have to apply maybe 20lbs or better to flex it....so it doesn't move unless you're Helen Keller and bumping it into **** on the way to the fastener.

I got it for the Ton Trucks and tractors and trailers and what not. Between heavy stuff or rusty stuff, I'd say get it. Also, mines the SHLF80...not the A, I guess mine were breaking and SO upgraded the head. They did this because they're the best...:spit:

What is it about the other ratchets that make you prefer them over the Dual 80?

This is a good question, Ratchet selection is really a personal thing, Everybody has their own preferences. The dual 80 I own is a good Ratchet, But it seems to have too many teeth for my tastes. I can get 95% of all my tasks done with a 24 tooth ratchet :D . If I need something finer toothed I'll grab a 45 tooth flex head or ratcheting wrench. Seems to work well for me at least :willy_nil

In my case I sold my 2 Dual 80's because I replaced them with the comfort handles. I think these are a matter of preference, they all do get the job done. But I would say Snap-On as a company is far more successful than the other brands you mention.

What is it you don't like about the extra tooth count? I don't see how more teeth could be a disadvantage.

Most people here are going to buy multiple brands of ratchets anyways. Especially if you are using them daily. There's a guy at work that has a 5k snap on bill and if you say anything bad about snap on he gets super mad. He's one that will almost never buy any tool that isn't snap on. At any rate I like the gearwrench ratchets and I like the snap on dual 88 ratchets too. Own em both and use them both at work.

I was trying to score the BAHCO dual 80.....but no luck so I got a good buy on a flex head SnapOn with comfort grip. Its easily the most expensive single hand tool Ive bought.....but then again a 3/8 ratchet is the most used item in my box.

Ive been using RP Craftsman ratchets (older USA).....so Im sure this will be a huge improvement.

i won't lie. some of it is just personal preference. i like the way the mechanism feels. to me it just feels better than the dual 80. i know that is subjective but that is what i notice.

going past that i really like the armstrong handle. it fits my hand very well and is comfortable. i have standard handle 88's and locking flex 60's in 1/4 and 3/8 sizes. i like the gearwrench versions also as i have the 120's in all three drive sizes. not as much as the armstrong but still quite nice. the star performer is my gearwrench with an 88 tooth matco kit. i like the handle length and of course the mechanism. i would love to see a slightly longer handled armstrong version. they also seem to be better balanced, not as heavy on the drive end. especially when using a large socket. the head is also thinner of course. it isn't an issue in every job but it happens to be an issue on a fairly regular basis. the head size and shape seem to allow better access than many other ratchets.
