Got my first vice today

It's definitely very big and awkward. But I got it for free!
I know it's not mounted like the vice master thread is mentioned, but there's a support beam pretty close to the edge and I was worried it would break off the bench if I had to really hammer something.

Would it be bad to hit it lightly with a grinder and clean up the rust to help it open and close smoother?

Congrats on the find. Yost 880? I had to Google as I did not recognize it. Looks like a real beast with the pipe jaws. Enjoy

Personally I would never take a grinder to a bearing surface. I would suggest that a bit of solvent and scotchbrite to start with. You want to remove only the dirt and oxidation and NO base metal

Correct, it is a yost 880! Made in Holland Michigan.

***EDIT** I think it actually is a 33c. I thought the numbers were 880, but after looking a little closer it is definitely 33c. Haven't Google searched anything yet on the model

You'd be better off coating using a paste wax. Anti-seize will leave a mess all over everything, forever.

33C, I see it now.

Myself and some others use a "cupped wire brush" to clean up the rust or REMOVE paint. This thing is nasty in a grinder so please be careful, but it will not remove iron within reason. The knotted ones tend to last longer.

Glasses alone are not enough, use a face shield and cover all exposed skin as I sometimes find the wires have ejected and stuck in my clothing. Just used one 2 days ago to clean up my latest find, and old Hollands.

Thank you guys! I definitely have a face shield and will grind it at work and clean it up. I will get some paste wax and lube it all up!
Should I just do the slides or the screw underneath too?

I have been to s friends house multiple times with stuck or broken things and used his vice before. He finally dug one out from in his garage and said "here you go. Here is your third set of hands".

I definitely owe him some pizza and beer

wire wheel the slide, and pull out the leadscrew, wire wheel it and grease it, ya should be good to go...

I think the ones we have at work are course. I am not really sure. We use them to grind cast iron. I'll definitely find a fine one to be safe.

Use a wire wheel as others have suggested. A grinder will leave you with an ugly uneven surface.
DO NOT even consider coating a vise in anti seize. You'll end up with anti seize on everything the next 3 generations of your family owns. Paste wax it if you want to keep the bare metal look, but if it were my vise, I'd repaint it.

No kidding! My friends just want to drink all my beer while I "help" fix their cars (meaning they watch while I turn wrenches.)

For free you definitely get a, You ****! I think I would just take it down and let it soak in some vinegar for a few days than clean it all up with a fine wire brush then paint the exposed surfaces. Leave the slide clean and some anti-seize on the screw, nut and maybe a light coat if needed on the slide. Enjoy your new vise!

Thank you, I have never heard of soaking stuff in vinegar before.
Should I dilute it? Or do I need to buy several gallons and a huge bucket for it?

Also, what kind of paint should be used?
