Tavy, don't be afraid of a stainless top. I buy and sell a fair amount of used boxes and the stainless seems to hold up far better then you would think.
Also saw a box with a 1/4 thick aluminum plate that looked great. Asked the guy and he said he bought a sheet and cut it with a worm drive circular saw with metal blade. To bring the shine back, he hit it with some 1000 grit sand paper and a little polish and it looked great. Now that won't get a mirror finish, but it would be bright. I'd try to find someone with a shear but it is a great idea.
Also saw a box on ebay that looked cool. I assume it was 3/4 plywood with black and white squares of vinyl stick on tile to look like a checkered flag. Border that with some aluminum angle and you have a unique top.
