The samples look pretty good. I got a pair of 2"x2" black and white tiles. They are 1/8" thick and look like they could take a pretty good beating. I didn't see these exact types of VCT at Home Depot or Lowe's, so I'll have to ask them about pricing and ordering them.

Here is the pricing breakdown that I got...

Armstrong VCT Excelon Feature Tile
Black Model # 56790 (12"x12")
White Model # 56830 (12"x12")

Lowe's:
Black- $43.25 per case of 45 = $0.96 per tile
White- $86.45 per case of 45 = $1.92 per tile

Home Depot:
Black- $78.51 per case of 45 = $1.75 per tile
White- $96.31 per case of 45 = $2.14 per tile

So with a checkerboard pattern it would average out to $1.44 per foot from Lowe's.

Both stores had to special order the tiles and said it would take 10 days to get them.

Here's a link to Armstrong's website listing all the flooring products they offer. They also have tiles that are slip resistent if you need them for wet areas. They also list all the available colors.

Thanks for the link Jay.

Someone had mentioned in another thread that the speckled VCT was much cheaper. Well, the speckled at home depot is $0.63 per tile and it is the same exact thing as the samples I received, just with grey speckles. I'll probably end up getting those just because of the huge price difference.

Here is a link to all the colors offered in the $0.63 tiles... http://www.armstrong.com/commflooringna/product_details.jsp?category=vct&item_id=381

Luke,

I used the "pure" white and black (no specks) in a rec room at my previous house and found it VERY hard to take care of due to every small scuff mark being visible. When I did the 1350 sq. ft. Hot Rod Grille Garage, I used the "speckled" white and black and found it to very easy to take care of (plus it gets a lot more severe wear since it's in a garage!). The price difference was a bonus since each tile cost 1/3 of what the "pure" tiles were. You've seen pics of my installation and will agree that when you see the room it looks white and black. You have to look closely to notice that the tiles are actually speckled.

Will jackstands damage this type of tile? How about welding? Thanks,

Jimmy

Both will damage the tiles. Your best bet would be to buy a bunch of extra tiles and use them under the jackstands and your welding area to protect the actual floor tiles. That way once they get damaged it is just an easy swap out.

Jim- Good info. I didn't even notice that your tiles were the speckled ones.

I have the speckled VCT in my garage and would recommend the speckled finish for reasons already mentioned. The speckles hide a multitude of sins. Just a word of advice, how your finish your tiles once installed makes a huge difference on how they'll wear or stand up. I'm new to the forum so haven't looked yet however I'm sure there's all kinds of info on here re that.

Craig,

Beautiful floor in your garage... That photo pretty much determined which option I'll be choosing when I do my garage floor in the spring... Outstanding job!

Luke,

I hope that you plan to post photos of your progress... I'm sure it will give me some pointers for when I eventually get around to doing mine.

Great site by the way... Lots of good info posted here. I even recognize a few posters from other forums I frequent.

Stan - I'll be doing a complete beginning to end write-up with a ton of pics. Mine will be even a bit more labor intensive than most because I will have to sand down my current epoxy coating. I'm gonna be doing this around Christmas time, so expect to see something on here around then.

Two big questions.....................first is how well will the tile contour to a floor that has a drain in it, which means a pretty heafty slope in a small distance, and, how will these hold up in colder climate areas??? I'm in St. Louis and the floor will get melted snow and water from washing inside in the winter. The garage is heated and A/C'd if that makes a difference. The VCT looks really nice, but I'm concerned about what it will look like 3-4 years from now!

The black looks awsome but I wonder what a whole floor of black would look like????? And the checkered patern is cool to look at in pics, but I don't think I could live with it every day.

I would say a whole floor of black would show quite a bit of dust.

You could get creative with a checkered pattern. I saw a building once where they had a dark green and white checkered floor. It was unique and looked good.

You could also do a border with a different colored tile.

Another thing you could do is use the same color but different shades. Like a dark and medium green checker board or border design.

Adding a third color could be an option.
