So my boss got a new space at work and he bought a bunch of new pallet rack. I noticed a bunch of old pallet rack on the floor and asked him what he was doing with it. He said I could have all of it, but I didn't realize that its not square or rectangle tubing its got a step down in one corner. I'm still taking it but wondering what the best use is for it. Maybe I could make myself a proper work bench, welding cart, welding table? What do y'all think? Once I bring it home ill get a better picture to showcase the weird geometry... That step down is for boards or wire racks that span from one side of the rack to the other.

Right, I guess I should have mentioned that. Now what do I do with it? I guess that would be good for a work bench... Just looking for ideas

if you also have pallet racking. I plan on cutting off the end of one of the beams and make it a bracket so that I can mount my grinder or vise to it. So when I need to have a vise, I can attach it to my pallet racking.

Build a shelf?

Yes you can use it to build a workbench. Put the 2x4s in the notch like you are supposed to use it and then put your piece of plywood on the top and screw to the 2x4s....easy

Sell it...Pallet racking is hot on CL around here. Then, take that money and buy something you really want.

If you cannot find matching legs, schmelpboy has the best idea.

Those beams are usually two pieces pushed together and seam welded. Not exactly high quality or strength material

They're actually surprisingly strong the way they're manufactured. that is until you put a dent in them. then they fold up like tin foil.

I think they would work perfectly for a work table and marginally for a cart. If they're free you'll be surprised at what they'll work good for. I love free steel. :)

A couple months ago I paid $100 for a set of new pallet rack from Lowes. It was 6 ft tall, 6 foot wide, and the shelves are 2 ft deep. There were three shelves complete with wire for the shelves.

10 to 15 per upright, 15 to 20 per cross member.

By that logic its $190-260 for the entire lot. I was hoping to sell the entire lot on craigslist, listed high at 350 but put negotiable. No bites yet.

Start yourself a steel pile, build a rack for all your scrap steel. Once you have scrap steel, in a rather organized fashion, youll be amazed at all the cool stuff you can do with it... next step, buy a welder.

The bottom line is it was free and it is in your possession. Let it sit(as long as you have the space for it). The worst that can happen it that you decide you do not have a need for it and you scrap it.

I have a bit of a steel pile and a welder, I was going to use it but honestly I could use the money.

I agree that I should be in no rush to sell it, I just don't want it in the way! I will have to come up with a place for it that is unobtrusive.
