I'll post this in the Fab section because it would have to be fabbed up. And it's not mine because I don't have any stairs. But it's a pretty ingenious idea for someone looking for that extra storage, both in the house and in the garage. And I know that quite a few have stairs in their garage, and you know who you are:cool:

Anyways..........

And I'll post this just because I think it pretty cool

ANd this could be used for what it shows, or something similar for the garage to put keys on, hang tools in behind, or whatever else you would want to hang in there

I'm actually getting ready to fab up something like the second photo that shows the cabinets under the stairs. In my case, they are going to be free standing roll around cabinets.

I should be able to get to it in about 3 weeks....

Ddawg.....When you do, make sure you post up some pics. ANd I think it's same to assume that this will be in the house addition? I don't think it would be too easy to do it with your spiral stairs in the garage.

Yes...the house....and I will take plenty of pics.

We are actually thinking of a way to use the space under the spiral stair case...

It would take a little work, but you could wrap it in sheet metal, or wrap it in a thinner plywood, and build some drawers into it. It would be work, but would be cool as hell to have spiral drawers going up. Block off the back of the steps so you couldn't see in the drawers, build some framework to hold the slides, have rounded drawer fronts. I can see it in my head, and it's pretty damn cool for sure. But what's usually in my head just bounces around and i can't get it out to paper to show you what I see in there

I have the under stairs section in my shop. Currently I am storing boxes under there. Looking at these it would make really good use to extend horizontal sheets from the stairs out. That would give me instant shelves at different depths to store and sort boxes.

I want to build some of the cable towers for work. Not for space but just for the cool factor.

I think they're pretty cool to.

If you do a Google or BING search for "under stair storage" and go to the images, there are some nice ideas. This is another that would work in a garage although it wouldn't have to be so fancy, but would make a nice garage office.

Love the cabinet covered by the picture. Don't love the picture. ;)

Yea, I think someone could have picked out a better picture than the 1st Grade artist picture.

Here is a simple storage idea. Instead of drawers or anything that pulls out, just add some shelves, and a few doors. That sure would create a ton of storage space.

I like the idea of this one also. It has a locking mechanism on it. That would be a great hiding place for all sorts of items. http://smartproducttechnology.com/secret-stairs It sort of reminds me of the Munsters, or the Addams Family where a pet dragon came out from the steps

And this one has the best of both. Drawers under the stairs and drawers IN the stairs.

The Taunton Press (publisher of Fine Woodworking, Fine Homebuilding, etc.) has (had?) a book on built-in storage. They had one idea very similar to the second picture. If I made the first one, I'd definitely use self-closing drawer slides. I'm pretty sure it still wouldn't be allowed here (Ontario) anyway.

I see your point but the side slide is a good idea. But, do you know how much work is involved in something like that?

I'd like to see it with the drawers out.

having built more than a few sets of stairs as a framer.......

making the riser into a drawer front will make for spongy, creaky stairs.....the tread can't carry the load alone

for normal, regular use stairs I use 5 stringers, 2" x 14", 1 1/8" treads and 3/4" risers, fully blocked and glued with construction adhesive and nailed with vinyl coated 16s.......then they get the oak finish work:thumbup:

my stairs don't make any noise or movement
