I brought these home from work today! We didn't have room to store them so they were going to throw them away. I said Hang on now, Ill take the 3 that match! I even got all 3 in the back of my Yukon XL!

They measure 36W x 18D x 52H.

Pretty excited about getting them for free, They will be perfect in the new garage. I think I may try to put them on casters though so they can be mobile.

Great score . . . yep, you've earned it . . . YOU **** !!

Get all the rest, even if they don't match. You can do some "horse trading" with other GJer's for extra tools for cabinets. ;)

Yup that's a big time you ****. Lateral filing cabinets aren't cheap. I was happy when I got one for free on CL.

I took out the hanging bars, painted it black and use it for my clothes.

I plan on using it to store stuff that used to be on shelves. I figure 1 or 2 drawers per stuff. All of my car audio wiring in 2, spare amps, speakers and stuff in another. And so on... I already have a 5 drawer that almost matches these. So that's a solid 12ft of drawer storage.

OP, I have a similar one and tried to put it on casters but they buckled the thin metal bottom of the cabinet. I would recommend building a wood platform (like a large version of a movers dolly), put the casters on the wood platform and the cabinet on top

Those are great for storage but I would NOT put casters on them, that's asking for an accident! They are too tall and narrow to be stable and would end up hurting or killing someone if loaded and trying to move them.

Maybe you could bolt two together back to back and then put them on casters? Then just pull it away from the wall to get at the ones facing the wall.

Gonna pick these up from work hopefully tomorrow. The logo on them says Art Metal, anyone know anything about these? Should be great for holding small hardware and such things. Each drawer has 2 drawers that you can lift right out once the drawer is open all the way. Pretty cool they are do easy to remove so you can take a drawer to a project if your not sure what size bolt you need. (for my uses anyways lol)

Not entirely sure how Im going to get these lol... They are really heavy, and all the drawers have some kind of stuff in them, from nuts and bolts to random hardware and supplies. Each cabinet measures about 18" wide, around 32" deep, and about 52" tall.
I can load them into a truck fairly easy from our loading dock, just not sure how Im gonna get them out at home lol! But either way I am not gonna pass on these for free!

That's awesome! Maybe try to take the drawers out for lighter transport.

I bought a BUNCH of lateral files at an auction 4+ years ago. I saved them for a "some day" shop. Currently have found a place for 10 of them and have three Tall/shallow models which are still looking for a place. Four of them I used as a "two wide" base for a work bench and it's going to work out pretty well I think.

I've got 6 lateral filing cabinets in my garage, ranging from 3-drawer to 5 drawer. The 3 drawer cabinets (3 of them) form the base of my work bench. 3 other 5-drawer units -- the nicest ones -- are my daughters' dressers.

Picked up all from local auctions and surplus sales. Probably averaged about $15 each.

These are card file cabinets and were used for storing aperture cards in the old days. These were very common and make great storage and/or parts cabinets! Nice find.

Regarding the old posts on lateral file cabinets ..... I have several of the 5-high cabinets (not the type with drawers, but with the swing-up front covers so there is nothing to pull out). I cut pieces of 3/4" thk. plywood the same width as the base of the cabinets and about 1" deeper than the base. Attached the plywood to the bottom of the cabinets (plywood projecting 1" forward of front of cabinet) and mounted 2" casters on the plywood to allow the cabinets to be easily moved. I very seldom move the cabinets, but it is sure nice to have that capabiliy. No problems with tipping stability.

I need to edit this... It was going to merely say "You ****" but now it's "you BOTH ****"!

I have a set of those file cabinets at work (as file cabinets) and you need to anchor them to a wall - if you open more than one drawer they *will* tip over. And they are heavy suckers to upright.

The library when I grew up had a reference card file that looked like a a shorter, longer version of these. I remember MANY hours looking up books in those things... long before these funny TV's with keyboards attached. Supercool score!!!

I got 3 just like those for free. My previous employer had a couple of those storage containers filled with these and overhead book cases, and I made 2 trips with my truck. They are great for plumbing supplies, electrical parts, boxes of fasteners.

Thanks a lot guys! I'm really excited about getting them, I saw a thread a while back someone got something similar and the "you ****" definitely kicked in lol.

Gonna pick them up on Saturday. Gonna have to clean all the **** out of them and see whats worth keeping. Currently snooping around to see what else I can have while I have a truck here lol

Lateral files make great garage storage. I used some like that for years with everything from kids toys, sporting equipment, yard chemicals, tools, car parts stored in them. Lined up along a wall they don't stick out too far and hold a lot of stuff.
3 for free, you got a great score.

stack em and secure them to the wall
I have a question about that. Each cabinet is 52 inches tall. That means even if he only stacks 2 of them, they would be 104 inches tall. That's more than 8 feet high. Assuming the walls of the garage are high enough to stack them, how would he get into the top drawers to get something out?

Lol I'm 6'2" and can reach 8ft no problem. However I doubt I would stack them haha. I have all 3 lined up along a wall right now, really liking all of the storage. Went and grabbed those 2 blue cabinets yesterday, whew they were heavy but got them alright with 2 people and a appliance dolly. My uncle's truck squatted about 3 inches after putting them both back there lol... also grabbed a few 120v clocks. Will wire boxes in the garage when I build it for them. Will be nice to not have to keep changing batteries on them!

I love free stuff, if I keep at it I will be out of room before my shop is even built haha.

Art Metal manufactured toolboxes for Craftsman for a time back in the 1950s.

And B17s during WWII. I'm on Mrs. LS6's IPad, so I cant look it up, but I've posted ArtMetal tags from from the inside of a B17 elevator I took photos of a while back.
