GPS for heavy equipment

Hey guys just bought a new stump grinder. First piece of equipment I’ve ever bought new from dealer, wasn’t cheap. I’d like to hold onto it for a bit, but unfortunately here in NY where there are zero consequences for anything, equipment has a tendency to vanish. Never had GPS on any of my other loaders, was just wondering if anyone had a system they use/recommended. Thanks !

Might check out "Heavy equipment forum" for some suggestions. I've also read some threads on "Forestry Forum" for the guys with portable $60k+ sawmills.
Iirc a lot of the talk was about subscription fees and the actual sender or "beacon" and weather it's satelite or cellular.
Congratulations on that pretty rig and sorry I didn't have any specific answers.
It sounds like you might have several pieces that you might want to equip and I'd call your insurance company, it might be educating. 👍

This isn't necessarily what you're looking for, but something I've considered:

Verizon sells a small watch for use with kids. Costs $5/month to have it on my cellphone plane. We have one that my son wears. If his watch leaves school before the end of his school day, I get a notification that he's left school. If he's out on the weekend, I can use the app to pull up his location on the GPS. It can be set remotely to 'be silent'

I've often thought about buying one and hiding it in my truck with a hardwired power to it.

It's called a gizmo watch.

You need to decide what features you want. There is GPS trackers, Then many products that include a tracker but also have telematics(remotely see hours, who is using it, ect) and there are units that have both the track and telematics in addition to Geofencing and time fencing. Ie The machine will not run out of a certain area, or time frame(like during the middle of the night). Also some units alert you of movement, many don't.

Also just so you are aware, theft of small equipment(which yours is) is much easier with a roll back bed and a winch. They just hook a chain to the tie down points of the track frame to the winch cable and in 3 mins or so they are gone.

I have a "Tracki" on my dumpster trailer. It gives me email and phone alerts if it's moved. It was about $30.00 plus 12 a month, less if you prepay a year in advance. I'm sure there's better and cheaper models. I hid mine in the battery box as it's only (easily) assessable with the dump bed up. I also have 5k coverage through my finance company for another twelve bucks a month. (8k trailer).

I also have large graphics for advertising on it. You may even consider painting it some oddball color so it's harder for someone to easily flip on CL or where ever.

I use TRAK-4 Purchased thru amazon.
Many brands availabe, but the TRAK-4 seems to have the lowest monthly fee which is important if you have many pieces of equipment to protect. My only complaint is they use AT&T which isnt as reliable in my area, but I assume they cut a deal with AT&T which allows the monthly cost to be low ($7). Seems to be a deal on these going on at amazon now, so I just bought another unit.

Their software (web based) is very good and allows geofencing. I use the unit with the hardwire power cord. The built in battery does last for months without charging. I bought one with the built in solar panel, but the monthly fee is higher, so something to consider.

If its a new machine, I would think the capabilities are built in. All of my heavy equipment have telematics. Bobcat, Volvo & Caterpillar.
As far as our trucks go I use a local vendor that installed GPS units. Like mentioned earlier all of these systems give real time alerts to activity outside the normal work schedule, geofencing capabilities etc...

Whatever you get make sure it can be well hidden. I work in the const equip rental field and all of our stuff is tracked with telematics. It has not stopped thieves from getting our stuff. There is currently someone stealing our scissor lifts from outside of big box stores in the new england area. We have lost about a dozen so far, they are snagging with a ramp truck and yanking the GPS units out and tossing them a few miles away from where they took them. They also got a few of our UTV's from jobsites, they ripped the GPS units out of those as well.

That being said we have also recovered a few, one skid steer ended up in a shipping container and was at the docks getting ready to be shipped over seas when we found it. People ****....

Just drop a shipping container at every job site!

People are dumb. Recovered one stolen one this winter
There's dumb, and meth-fried-brain-dumb.

A jackass fired up a dozer in a job site in the middle of the night here, crowded residential area, then was running 'full speed' on Central Avenue, didn't wanna stop for the cop cars, so they brought in a SWAT truck.

I don’t know much about the electronic tracking. But I would second some big sticker with your name on it or something identifiable. I would weld your name on buckets or other attachments.

maybe a master disconnect switch and fuel pump toggle switch just to make things more difficult

I vaguely remember seeing some type of lock box to go over the joysticks with a new padlock - might be worth fabricating something up

what about a pet python to leave inside haha?

Has anyone tried the Milwaukee ticks? I remember hearing about them when they first came out but never heard any feedback from guys who tried them.
