Partsmaster sells a good line of fasteners. They sell grade 5, grade 8, and what they call Sixshooter bolts. The Sixshooters have a slightly different head and are a grade 8+. Partsmaster stuff isn't he cheapest, but it is better than anything we can get around here for the price. If you have a good salesman in your area, you can get good service, too.

You have to be careful with fasteners, because a lot of the import stuff I have seen was not the grade it was advertised to be. Heads snap off constantly and you have to fight to get the stump out.

Totally Stainless is my go to fastener supplier. I love their stuff. It works AND looks great.

You can always tell something I have worked on. Not only is the area clean, its painted (visualize replacing a waterpump on a Chevy) and has nice shiny hardware holding it in place.

I use stainless a bit, as well. One issue you need to concern yourself with regarding stainless is galvanic corrosion. Stainless just doesn't get on well with some other materials, a prime example being aluminium. Zinc plated fasteners are a much better choice in that case, as the stainless fastener will lead to fairly rapid corrosion of the aluminium. Otherwise, stainless, though more expensive initially, is a great choice!

While Fastenal are handy if you need a bolt "right now" their prices are rediculous. I needed some M6 & M8 stainless nyloc nuts. Dropped by Fastenal & was quoted $147.00. When I expressed some incredulity at the price I was told "Stainless prices have gone thru the roof". However,fastenal seems to think prices going into orbit is the same as thru the roof.
Went home & used Bolt Depot online & got the EXACT same nuts for $38.00 (100 of each & flat stainless washers) .

I hadn't thought about Tractor Supply, I'll check them out. ZRX61 is right about Fastenal's prices, they are really high but they always had the stuff I couldn't find elsewhere.

Just a word of caution about stainless steel fasteners. A lot of them are VERY weak, especially if they are from offshore. Be sure you know the grade and stick with reputable supply companies like Totally Stainless.

Fastenal is a joke. You have to buy a whole box (usually 100), and their prices are usually at least double that of the two large nut and bolt houses in the area. Also, their selection isn't really much. The two major privately owned nut/bolt shops have inventories and selection so much larger than Fastenal, I couldn't even begin to give a comparison.

This is where Elroy must beg to differ. We get a lot of custom work in our shop that many times call for unique fasteners. Fastenal ALWAYS has access with in one day to anything! Fact, never seen it fail in 15 years.

Left hand acme nuts, They got em.

Type "F" Tek Screws, They got em.

But if you want your vanilla, run of the mill 1/4-20 nuts. Forget getting a deal a Fastenal.

That's where the joke comes in.

I think you guy are off on your Fastenal prices. I have an account there, and therfore get very good prices. I used to have an account through Lawson. While I believe they sell a superior product (tufftourque) or something, and it is branded with their name, I get MUCH better pricing through Fastenal.

Problem with Fastenal, is they get product from everywhere and repackage it. Lawson has the head stamped Lawson. Fastenal's service is MUCH better. Lawson used to ship part of an order, then charge me UPS for every part number as it came in, instead of waiting to ship it all together. The salesman made all the difference there. He would only come around onceor twice a year, over-order stuff, then ship it like we were dying to get it.

If I had to rely on a bolt to save my life, I'd take Lawson. Everything else, get Fastenal.

Yea I said FREE I used to work right next door to a Fastenal and we shared the dumpster with them, consistently several times a month I would pluck brand new boxes and bags of hardware they purged from their system! (according to the store mgr) I checked fearing they were being ripped off. For some reason they would not set it aside and let me just come by and collect the goodies which meant I had to daily check, then dumpster dive to get the goodies. At any rate I accumulated quite a pile of new free in the container hdw this way for several years till I changed jobs.

I need a special locking nut, and Fastnal said that they can order it in for me, and have it on Monday. That is better than the other supplier that told me that it isn't available. The price was reasonable also, even though I have to buy a box of 50 and I only need 10. The balance will go into my bolt selection box for future use.

Thank god it wasn't anything like that at all, generally just an arms reach over the side of the dumpster, I never actually loaded myself in or anything so absurd as that, I just grabbed what was visible. Besides, I think you are just jealous I got all that shiny new hdw and it cost not a cent!

Hey! it's that absurd. I've got into dumpsters to get goodies. Free TVs, DVD players even a BMW M3 cylinder head with a couple bent valves. $15 for two new valves and sold it for $450! It was worth getting the boots and hands dirty for that.

Local to me is A&A Bolt, and Leonard Jed, and they have always had what I needed in their inventory on location. Both are one location family owned business that have enormous on site inventories.

Good thing about Fastenal here, is they have 3 store in the immediate area, so there is a good chance one of them will have it. They have pickup trucks making deliveries, so that helps too.

When I "need" a grade 8 I like to be kinda sure of what I am getting. Most of the time that means NAPA when I want it now.

Nice thing about parting a car is that I am building up a good supply of nuts and bolts.

Fastenal blows !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I use to buy from them and their "associates" have no clue. Two problems I had caused me to change.

I carried a 5/8" x 5" grade 8 bolt into my local store last spring and told them I needed 6, after watching 3 "associates" huddle up they brought 6 bolts to the counter that had 8.8 stamped on the head !

The other problem was over stocking. They had so many bolts and nuts in my cabinet, it was sagging in the middle. I want service from a vendor, not add a bag of everthing everytime you come by.

I used to do mobile maintenance for GE trailer fleet a few years ago.When a new guy got hired he got to set up his truck however he liked.Alot of guys would throw out whole bins ,bolts and all,into the dumpsters and have wurth re-outfit the truck.-You can bet your *** I was in the dumpsters pulling them out and taking them home.I've seen guys get a truck that a slob had and have the whole floor covered in bolts,nuts,brass fittings,electrical connectors,back up to the dumpster and just shovel the stuff into the dumpster.I've gotten a 75' hose reel,a 22 ton air jack,boltbins,parts trays all from that dumpster.
