Unique doesn't begin to describe that, cool, different, looks very functional. Gotta follow this one.
Thanks
You and your WIFE poured 27 yards by yourselves???? WOW.
My hat's off to you both!

Interesting unconventional build. Subb'd.
Thanks,
It wasn't too bad, I think the hardest part was timing it right for the temperatures in the 60's and night time right above freezing. So when the pour came it was about getting it into place worry about screeding it when the truck left as I had them spaced out hour apart. Rented a power screed in town, bought a concrete ******** at Horror Freight and rented the power trowel in town too. Bought the rakes, bull float and derby's cause the house needs to be built next.
We currently live in a truck camper that is green if you go back and look at my pictures, it's in the background and you can see our 2400 watts of power running the place currently. Been in this place past 4 years with the wife.

Back wall framing got put up in sections due to size of the sheets that would cover them and the time of the year. Essentially did middle section first and didn't frame the side wings so I could get the largest sheets up before high winds hit with sub zero temperatures. Sounds great and all, but didn't work out, it went the opposite way in the middle of it.
Was only fitting to put the grain bin doors on the pole barn since it's built from them. As for attaching the stud plate to the concrete, I tried regular masonry bit "nope", hammer drill bit "nope" was burning them up and taking way too long so in my frustration I threw in the towel and went with Milwaukee 1 3/4" SDS Max, takes longer to pull the bit out of the hole than to drill the hole .
3" channel iron for stud plate, 1 5/8" x 1/8" thickness pipes 24" O.C. welded to the structure then 1.5" x .25" flat stock welded to pipes 36" O.C., hard to see, but when sheets go up it brings them out.Stud plate.jpegStud plate1.jpegStud plate2.jpegBackwalle.jpegBacwall2.jpeg

These sheets are 20 gauge, they are called "Supersteel" out here basically B decking panel, High Shear B decking panel and list goes on. It's also used for pouring concrete on when braced right. Each sheet weighs about 160 lbs they are 38" x 24' long with 36" coverage. Trying to put these up with high winds (30 mph) and sub zero temperatures made it fun as it took about 2 weeks to get them up.
Can't see the back wall framing well so I didn't take many pictures putting it up.
Fun part was I had to put the sheets up twice or three times, pull them up mark them, take them down cut, pull back up check fitment, if wrong repeat.

Last pictures, now little after a year and two months everyone is now caught up.View attachment 1775886View attachment 1775887
Next up is the front wall which will be done in sections. going to do the wings, each wing will have a 8' garage door and one wing is my side other side is the wife's. The middle is for big projects and each side will be sectioned off to save on heating till I bury it.

That was my thought, that is insane.

100% agreed. My neighbor and I poured 12 yards in his barn by ourselves, and i have done concrete work for a contractor before. And it absolutely wiped us out.
I am very physically fit combat vet served as infantry so I guess it is insane. Here is a picture of us and these pictures are a year in the making as I took them exactly a year apart. Next year I will take 3rd picture in September.

you and your missus both look fit. I think that's the only way you got it done. Another example of why it pays off to be in shape. Good job.
Thanks,
Trailer load.jpegTrailer load1.jpegOnly way all of this got done unless one has access to machinery at their disposal. After all how many people can take down 17 grain bins in two weeks with no machinery that got the materials for this build. After a 12 hour day we go walking up and down the hills out here 5 plus miles, helps to think things over.
Here is one of the two trailer loads of materials we brought home. Guess I should upload the grain bins before and after taking them down too.

I kinda thought you had clerestory lighting in your drawings between the top arch and the sides. Maybe my (hopeful) imagination.

This is a terrific project to follow from afar. Good work -- and thanks for the chance to see it.

Thanks and you're welcome,
I was going to, but upon looking at what metal would go there that would match the profile of the metal on the roof's and how the roof from the wings attached to the main structure I wanted to push the rain and snow farthest away from the seam as possible. Putting a flat sheet that I didn't have unless I used material that I used on the back wall up there wouldn't make the design flow so that wind, rain, and snow can flow around it. Windows will be put in later, for now it was about drying it in before this winter hit which it did a month and half early. Going to put tinted RV windows up there, they unlike home windows have flange that is stronger to hold onto thin wall structures and tempered which is great for the baseball sized hail out here.
Two of these on each end...RV window.jpg

If you're figuring out how to get windows to seal on that corrugated steel, what about welding up a flat frame and welding it onto the corrugated? Might be a little fitting to get it right, but with a welded seam at the flat frame, you can then seal the window right onto the flat frame and avoid the sealing at the siding interface.

Having disassembled and reassembled a few grain bins over the years my hat is off to you !! That's a lot of work. The last one we moved was only 24' diameter and was only going 9 miles so we took the roof and two rings off and had that section, a section with four rings and the bottom with three rings total to haul. It worked very very well going 30mph on a Sunday morning before everyone was awake !!

As far as sealing windows up most older grain bin doors had the bin sheets bolted to them and just have a bunch of tar goobered between them to keep corn in and everything else out. We've got a few bins that are 60yrs old and are still nice and dry inside. I'm sure I can take some pictures if you'd like but you likely saw how it all is if you took 17 of them apart lol

I have done this before, I have a 40 HC (high cube) shipping container I turned into a 5th wheel RV that I put 3 RV windows in, in that form. It's why I opted for those windows. Guess I need to post pictures of that progress too, also I put a barrel ceiling in the RV project too. Though one thing I concluded, 40' is too big need to cut it down in size.

I can build about 10 plus gazebos with left over material I have and I have people wanting me to get more for free come spring/summer.
Anywho, here is my 5th wheel project I had to move one of 6 times the last time before it got here. You can see windows I put in and the framing of them. Don’t mind the paint job, it hasn’t been painted yet.3BEFBB7F-48BE-4EAD-A755-DF9BCB96ACB8.jpeg7399431C-CC12-48D0-95B5-172779471907.jpeg

Cool propery and building. How much land do you have ? No neighbors ?
Nope no neighbors for 3 miles, on the west side is few thousand acres of BLM Bureau of Land Management deadlocked from access leased by ranchers for cattle, to the north is vacant wanting to buy it whenever they sell, other side of the road to the east is two properties we are going to buy too when it sells. The property to the south 1600 ft away is empty too.
All these properties are 20 to 30 acre parcels so with that said we own 90 acres currently which is 4 parcels, if we buy one of the two to the east it will connect two of the other properties to this one bringing it up to 90 acres connected with 4th parcel of 20 acres a mile from here down the same road I live on which is a dead end and it's the last property on this road. Now the road is 5 miles of private road from last parcel on the end to main road with a 2 mile offshoot loop connected to it. Also one of the other two parcels is also connected to BLM land.

Sounds like heaven and is in some regards if you don't mind 115 temperatures in summer, -40 with -60 wind chills in winter, high winds up to 80 mph in spring/summer, place has it's own climate here, mail runs 3 days a week "at most", no cell phone signal, no utilities run up here and there is a ridge to climb in the middle of it all it is. Oh I forgot we get snow that will bury you in at least twice a winter and it's a 50 mile drive down rock/clay roads open ranged to cattle in dead of winter or you can go the short way that's 30 miles same terrain way bumpier with bigger river rock. Though on one section it's fun when the prairie dogs decide to put a hole in the road and pop up as you try to aim to run them over! So far between me and wife score is 2 prairie dogs, 1 rabbit, 3 cows, a deer, and 6 pheasants road killed ;)

How am I able to get internet, simple, the terrain is diverse out here on this property and the ridge ends at this property. Walk up the hill 100 ft and there is a tree I climbed 40' up stuck a directional cell phone booster up there on electrical conduit pipe, ran 500' of RG-11 cable to receiver and we get cell phone signal up to 75 away from it.

Doubt it, I'm thinking I'd buy the beer and join in on the fun.
I don't think the wife would like a second man running around naked welding, :eek:What you guys thought the avatar was a eye catcher or a joke :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:
Just think, if you look really close at the pole barn design it looks like it's something you would find drawn on the bathroom stall!

Ya there’s definitely gotta be a line drawn here. Now I don’t mind a good kick in the nuts, hell I’ve even paid good money for such. But burning the boys is crossing that line. :scared:

Ah it isn't that bad, just wear a welding jacket and use it to protect the family jewels. Best time to come around here for a beer bourbon is when it's below 80 degrees.

I hope this is everything you’ve ever wanted after serving our country!
No but it's what I was handed and I worked with what I got and made the best of it and didn't pull a pity party instead I learned how to live again. Which in the end has made me who I am which in return has built this place and everything here with my two hands and gotten me further than most my age with so little.

I sure hope that's a hint of what you've got planned for your "barndominium warming" party when this is all done.
Hate to inform the general public there is no strip clubs here in this county or any other county connecting to this one, in fact I don't think there is one on the east side of this state either.
Guess we are going to have to recruit some from here.
