I contacted grainger earlier today to ask a few questions about my account. While I had the lady on the phone I asked about my order. Then I asked her how the "will call" worked when the item was being shipped from the manufacturer. She told me it wasnt coming from the manufacturer then said "wait, im wrong, it is coming from the manufacturer. It has a 5-7 day lead time before it would be available for shipment." Then she said "will call is not available on items coming from a 3rd party, only items coming from another grainger." She told me the items will NOT leave the manufacturer if "will call" was selected.

I went ahead and changed my order to delivery at my shop. Even with the $75 shipping charge this is still a hell of a deal.

Im going to call back tomorrow and see if I get a different answer.

Edit- My account has been charged which I was told wouldnt happen until it was shipped. If this deal falls through I am going to be really bummed out.

She doesn't sound very convincing

I was initially told the same thing, but as stated previously I was talking on the phone locally and the guy worked hard to make sure it was a valid deal. In the process he asked a more knowledgeable person and was able to get "will call" pick up for mine coming in 4 to 7 days.

My electrical knowledge is limited. I want to buy this Miller 180 welder, but the specs say it needs 230 volts input. I was under the impression that the two types of household outlets are 110 and 220. Now this welder wants 230 and some people are talking about 240. Can anyone give me a quick breakdown for the electrically challenged?

Just add some volts and you'll be good

Don't sweat it. Most US is now two 120 nominal legs to make the 240 volts. It depends where you live and your particular house wiring with voltage drop (length of wire and gauge) but where I am the voltage really does stay around 120V. 110 and 115 are largely older standards. The present US standard is 120/240.

110v = 115v = 120v
220v = 230v = 240v

115v does not equal 230v

No worries. HOWEVER, input amperage might be an issue at 21 amps.

Basically household current is either 120 or 240 volt. 110 and 220 are still used as common terminology as on older service or longer runs the voltage drop delivers closer to 110 and 220 at the house service.

In short 220=230=240 and 110=115=120 for all practical purposes.

At least this is my understanding. :)

Basically, your power is 120/240 if you are in the us. Some people still say the older standards but it isn't correct. The electric company tries to put out 120/240 and the system they design is based on that. At least here in Southern Cal. That welder is designed to work over a range of voltages, probably from 210 to 250V, is what I would guess.

So the 30% duty cycle on the Miller 180...

I can use it for active welding 3min out of every 10min? Am I understanding this right?

What minimum additional things do we need to buy to start welding? Gloves, shield, gas bottle? How much more is all that? What's the smallest gas bottle you should get?

I think both are "wire feeder" capable meaning no gas required unless you need to weld very thin stuff. Add additional options as you need them.

I wouldn't get a small bottle because the cost is a lot higher per unit.

Correct-o-mundo! :)

But that is actually for the maximum settings which isn't likely.

Steve

And try running a 3 minute bead nonstop as a beginner in a home garage. You'll be like me....weld for 30-40 seconds....move...beer, wipe sweat, rearrange body, then start again. lol

There is a duty-cycle table to follow somewhere that will show if you have settings around half-way then I would guess the time would increase to MUCH MORE than 3 minutes, maybe even 7 or 8 minutes out of 10. Can't say for sure without looking.

For $395, who cares? :D
You won't find another that's better.

Thanks for the info.

I have been watching MIG how-to videos for years and practicing my cursive "e" motions holding the detached head of a 9lb sledge hammer to get some muscle memory going.

We will see. I have about 6 welding projects stacked up I am open for advice on what are more new-guy friendly:

1. Repair sheet metal in old Lista tool boxes
2. Repair crack in 5/16 thick Cast iron base of Powermatic planer
3. Repair pipe fence (2.5 oil field pipe got broken by a falling tree)
4. Repair some old steel M13 rifle racks
5. Repair some old Aluminum alloy M12 rifle racks
6. Merge my Brinkman electric smoker with a Cress Core upright warming oven (both aluminum and steel involved).

I would suggest getting a lot of practice and knowledge before tackling those projects. Be careful of stainless steel containing chromium poison. Cast iron needs careful pre-heating. Any zinc-coated material will make you physically ill. . . yada-yada

OK - I've got a point to bring up on this thing. I called a buddy that was looking for a welder and we've just looked on line at the Grainger site for this deal. He uncovered something that I think might be an issue. It's not clear to either of us that this specific model/product number at this price is anything other than the power unit and the regulator and cart. Is the gun and cable assembly, wire, etc also included?

It would appear to be included. If you look under "Additional Information" on the product details page you see; "Auto-Set™ feature allows for quick and easy set-up. Spatter-free start with tip saver and trigger reset. Include regulator, 10-ft. MIG gun, and hose cart."

YMMV

Edit: an AL specific Spool-gun is not included, just the MIG gun.

Yup, I mentioned to my Grainger rep earlier this morning that I didn't want to order any other "options" until I have seen what is included in the $395 package. I think the spool gun option is around $260 but on;y needed when welding aluminum, and still need to see what IS included though. But either way, it is still a good deal.

Is anyone able to view "order status"? When I click it, it says "We're sorry, you are unauthorized to access this information." When I view my order history, I see the order I placed, the date, and order number, but it does not say the status or anything like that at all. Maybe because my account has not been approved yet? Not sure how long that will take if that's the problem.

I have been thinking about a welder, this just might be it, does this come with everything needed to work? IE turn key out of the box? Or do I need to buy anything else like the gun?

Also, can you run this from say a dryer plug at 220v and 30 amps? It is ght next to my garage but I don't have the ability to put a 220 plug actually in my garage.

Also will this do pretty much anything around the house/garage? Light and medium stuff? L

I've got the confirm email. Mine was just over 5 bills thanks to NY tax and shipping. And I still have 13% Cdn tax to pay at the border (on the $395). Still a good deal if it comes through. Too bad my nearest location isn't open sat otherwise I'd have tried willcall.

Like someone suggested earlier, I might try to sell it and my Lincoln migpak 180 and buy a 211/212.

Damnit, I just called again and got a different answer, WTF> I guess Im gonna call the local branch and sort this out. I might even go talk to them in person. After I asked the question, I then told him I got a different answer earlier, and he clearly said "nope thats wrong"

I mean its still a deal , but I dont want to spend almost $100 on shipping ifI dont have too. That will help lease a tank and buy some gas
