I am going to the upcoming Grainger show that starts Monday. I have just looked through the Vendor list and flagged some to make sure I stop at. This show is in Orlando and all expenses are paid by Grainger. I will of course have many places to visit for my real job as well. Has anyone been to one of these? Any burning questions I can sweat any of these companies about?

Ask Grainger how they get away with some of their markups ($8 billion in sales in 2011, so something's working.)

Grainger certainly has high markups. Most companies buy without even asking for better pricing. I have the flexibility to buy elsewhere(Amazon, Fastenal, Lowes). I prefer the Proto and Wera I buy from Grainger over having to deal with Fastenal or buying a Taiwan import from Lowes. There prices are very negotiable when you have an account and a rep. I have seen how much of a percentage they will go down on some items which tells me how huge there markup is.

This will be my third year. Orange County Convention Center is new this year, but in past at WDW there was a huge bar hang out area, and tons of food and drink carts everywhere.

Sunday is outdoors, not much shade at Orange county so dress for the sun. Make sure you can get there as close to 12:30 as possible you'll need the 5 hours plus just for this part. Dewalt/proto usually have a huge tent, Lenox usually cuts up a car, can't remember who but they burn a dummy and show how different types of gloves and fabric burns and burns you.

You're saying these few booths are your top booths that you want to talk to, you're going to find some tool companies that you never heard of, but will walk away with I have to get that " xy or z tool" right now. Milwaukee has a great booth every year with tool give always every hour. Make sure to stop by C.H. Hanson booth early their shirts go fast. Also while there get a demo of their auto adjust grip pliers they usually have a few case of pliers to give away. Locktite usually have their locktite tape again that goes fast, by mid morning on Monday they're usually out.

You're going to go nuts with the amount of information that you're going to see and get. I've been to alot of large trade shows and have set up some large ones up. But by far this is the one of the most impressive show I have ever been to. I'd rank this a close second/third to the International builders show or the National hardware show.

I usually go through about 100 business cards. Its nice because unlike other shows you won't get hammed with a ton of venders calling for the next couple of weeks after the show. You can ship 1 box free Monday and Tuesday. So make sure to get lots of stuff.

Last item make sure you have good shoes.

I have some freebies and samples I will post pics of later but wanted to post about some of the questions I asked and things I seen.

SK Tools
First and most exciting booth which surprised me was SK Tools. The guys were nice and I really enjoyed talking with them. I asked why they don't have ratcheting combination wrenches yet. I was told wait a year or so and that they are in development. From talking with them they really pride themselves on being US made. I looked at the SK prybars and they looked very similar to the Welde ones I ordered on Wilde Wednesday.

Craftsman
By far my most disappointing visit. I may have come across ripping there product but I started out asking about the outsourcing, specifically to China. I mentioned I dont want to buy Craftsman Industrial made in US and possibly have it replaced with Chinese warranties. I was told they will not move the Industrial line and that it is and will remain US made. As for the rest they said it will be all moving, hand tools that is. When I asked why move it and why to China they gave me some hogwash about it being a "Global" brand and that saying USA on it doesnt matter to the rest of the world. I asked why not stamp them with CHINA then. No good response.

Vaughn Hammers
Guys were very nice and proud of being American Made. They were showing a lot of hammers but really showing off the Titanium Rip Hammer. This hammer felt very good and I will probably be buying one soon even though it is 3 times the price of the steel hammers.

Stanley/Proto/Blackhawk
This booth was busy and harder to talk to anyone for long. I did check out the new US Proto ratcheting combo wrenches. The felt very good. And like someone stated on an earlier post here that they were light in the hand. I also looked at the Taiwan made Blackhawk ones, these were black chromed. They felt very good and are very affordable. I didnt even bother looking at the Stanley line.

Channellock
Very nice guy was working there. We talked at length about the Channellock products we use at work and he is sending me a sample of a newer handle style they have now.

Knipex
I asked why the whole line is not available through Grainger and actually talked to the Knipex employee in charge of the Grainger account. He said any Knipex can still be sourced through Grainger and if it is ordered a few times he adds them in. He offered to have a rep stop in to my work.

Wera
These guys had the new Joker wrenches and were showing the benefits of the open end. I was told they are still developing them. They had a lot of neat screwdrivers and everything looked and felt good in the hand.

Snapon Industrial
The Williams High visibility combination wrenches in red looked really nice. They are also available in yellow.

I mailed back catalogs of pretty much every single tool company and when I get them in tomorrow if I see anything else interesting I forgot about I will post it. The most exciting thing I heard though was the attitude and info from the SK booth. I am really looking forward to seeing some ratcheting

Maybe I can and just don't know but would like a place to walk in a shop SK tools. Granger is obvious here but it seems to me their prices are higher than other sources. Maybe I'm asking too much at this point. Craftsman is obviously a disappointment. I have a bunch of Craftsman but not so much because it was great stuff, it's because it has been easy to get and US made. Now that it's not, there is really no point since other brands like Kobalt, Gearwrench and others are warrantied just as easy.

Thanks for the update. Wish they had shows like that around here.

I received in the following as a follow up with Channellock. These must be a brand new line of tools just coming out. I don't even find anything from this catalog on there website. I also received a sample of new item E388 which I cant find online. There are 18 new items in this catalog. There are not even on Grainger yet but I am going to have them source another item out of this catalog.

I have a hard time loading photos if anyone wants to see the rest of this catalog PM me and maybe you could load it on here.

An alternate reality in a parallel universe.
Thank you very much for posting the info and pictures. I was asked by the General Manager of my local Grainger asked me if I went to the show, I said no, he seemed surprised since he knows how many tools I buy. I'm going to hit him up for some catalogs.
