Granite Bench Top

So my mom is redoing her kitchen and she has two pieces of granite that he has no use for and doesn't want to store them and isn't going to get any money for selling them. Has anyone used granite counter tops in a mainly automotive type shop?

Just wondering if I should pick up one or both of these, both are roughly 24"-27" wide and 50"-57" long.

If they are free, and already cut and polished as countertops then sure.

But granite will crack, so no beating on parts with a mallet on that bench.

Otherwise I would find a place to install them in my house if they are finished and free. Like a laundry room or bathroom since they likely won't fit your kitchen layout.

One of the guys at work just used some pool table slate, I figure it'll have about the same life as the granite. I'm not sure I'd want to do any heavy work or pounding on it.

It should look nice and clean easy though.

I'm not sure whether it was Ddawg or who it was, but in the garage they had the bar counter with a slab of granite on it.

If it's freebies, go for it. It'll fit in the garage somewhere.

I use a piece of granite top in my wood working shop for a glue up surface because it's nice and flat. I don't think it would be all that great in an automotive shop environment, you can't hammer anything on it.

If youre gentle with it, you might use it for a light duty welding table.

It's actually working out well......because you don't want to 'bang' on it, it gets used for paper work (and junk collection)...quite frequently when we have to separate the kids so they will do homework, one of them will be there...

I would take them simply because they're free granite. Although it is a little high end for a shop, I think they would make a cool work surface for tasks that don't require hammering or pounding. Or maybe use them for something non-shop related, like a desktop. If you don't have a use for them, you can store them in a shed and figure out what to use them for at a later date.

I think it would be great, maybe put a bench plate on it which is better for pounding anyway, the rest of the time it would make a nice work surface. I like the idea of a welding surface, seems like the occasional spatter would clean up a lot nicer on a non ferrous material.

I just bought a granite top lately for my office wet-bar. While looking at samples, I was shocked at how easily the salesman knocked a corner off with a small hammer so I could take it home to compare colors. I wouldn't plan on hitting it with anything significant for sure.

I've seen a lot of photos of guys garages that have a bar off to the side.
If you have the room,...why not build a nice simple 2X4 framed base and use the granite on top of it. Put in a beer tap, order a keg of your favorite brew, set up a small {or lrg} flat screen and you're good to go for your Super Bowl party.

I have the piece that was cut from out countertop where the sink went in my garage and use it as a polishing plate. Glue a sheet of wet sandpaper to it and polish or burnish any flat surface with it. It also comes in handy leveling a surface with rougher grits.
