Has anyone heard of Grants axes? If so are they rare and were they a good axe?
My next door neighbor has a Bradford lawn tractor that was made by Huffy. Grants sold all kinds of stuff. That would be WT Grants. One of the great old department stores from the American before-time that went belly-up in the 1970s. You could buy just about anything in there. They even had a pet section with fishes and birds. And Bradford brand electronics/appliances. I still have my old 1/4" single speed Grants electric drill from the 1960s. Still runs like a champ.
I imagine the axes are not all that common, but I can't say for sure. There were a plethora of stores back then like all the mom-and-pop hardwares that would have come to mind first when looking for such tools. Plus if I recall, Grants focused on city/suburb (rather than rural) where axes just weren't part of the home tool supply--the suburb I grew up in had a Grants, and I'd be surprised if there were a dozen axes owned in the whole town.
As for quality, I imagine like private label hand tools they were made by an established mfr that designed it for a price point. An expert in axe collecting might very well tell you the make and grade just by examining the head.
