Grass in paved driveway: replace with concrete?

I had a paved asphalt driveway installed about 18 months ago. I am having issues with grass/weeds growing right through the edges of the driveway destroying it. I put Roundup on the grass/weeds, but that isn't going to stop new grass/weeds from coming through.

Would it work to cut the driveway back about four inches and then pour a four inch strip of concrete with rebar in it? I suppose weeds/grass could still make their way under the concrete, but probably less likely.

I use a propane roofers torch to kill weeds like this. It kills the whole plant without harming the asphalt. If you edge your driveway @ 2" put a little Preen along the driveway and seal the driveway and let the sealer roll over to seal the edge.

I'm not understanding exactly how I would use a weed burner here. If I heat the asphalt won't it melt or burn?

If you pass the flame onto a plant it will wilt and die quickly. You wont have the flame on the asphalt long enough to burn it.

Just asphalt with a tapered edge. Typical way I see most asphalt driveways done.

Roundup only kills growing foliage that is it directly applied to. While it also kills the roots of that foliage, it does not prevent seed germination nor growth of weeds not directly sprayed.

We use a material from Ortho called "Ground Clear" to prevent weeds in the pavement cracks and joints on the airport in my front yard. Like Roundup, Ground Clear kills existing foliage, but it also prevents germination of new seeds and new root growth for up to a year. We usually use a hand sprayer with a small or pin-point needle nozzle to tightly control where the Ground Clear goes. This is very effective in preserving our paved asphalt areas.

Use caution, as it will definitely kill anything growing in soil that is sprayed by accident. A guy I know sprayed it under some mature ornamental bushes to kill the weeds, and it also killed his bushes!

I don't know what is like in Minn. but here in Ohio. if you concrete your driveway it is considered a permanent improvement and you pay property taxes on it

THey sell a version which prevents weeds for a year or so, I use that. Works great.
