Graveldrive 101

Hey, I couldn't find a gravel driveway forum so I figured if post here. My gravel driveway is ****. I recently had it torn up from moving a tiny into the property. I need a quick fix so to prevent it from getting worse. J dkbt know **** about driveways. I picked up some 3/4 clear thinking I would pack with the slop.
Am I making the problem worse? What should I do?

Location, location, location. Without that it’s hard to suggest. I’m in Michigan with a small farm and plenty of dirt roads. Knowing what type of ground and weather it’s a **** shoot.

Of course. On the coast of BC, just north of Vancouver. Similar to Seattle. Mild and wet winters. We just had a cold spell with 12" of snow, then above freezing with steady rain for 4 days. The ground is sopping. Water table is high to begin with.

Welcome to mud city with that location. Same here, best I can suggest is to get larger stone to fill the bottom. Without a road mat to support the rock it will sink. I have matting laid down in certain areas that turn to mud. Laid mat and spread what ever is around. Without the mat it sinks, with it stabilizing the ground things are fine. Neighbor next to me brought in some five inch stone and built it up from there with finer grades. Good luck, as it is a battle every year.

Big aggregate with geotextile on top and then your top gravel on top of that. By big, I mean rocks like shale or limestone chunks in a nice solid, thick base.

I also live in B.C a bit east of vancouver. I have a gravel driveway to my shop. I put fabric under my driveway and parking area when I built it. Also you I found that I needed a good 3-4in of gravel at a minimum to get enough thickness to make a solid path to drive on and used a compactor after spreading the gravel, I prefer road pack with some 3/4in mixed in.

Based on your pictures i'd say the problem is you need a LOT more gavel in that area.
