Gray Stubbies: Finish Issues

I was lucky enough to get in on the Gray Tools stubby deal from the hot deals thread last week. $19 plus shipping for a nice set of wrenches seemed almost too good to be true, so I ordered a set in metric and hoped for the best. They arrived on Thursday and after initial inspection I was less than thrilled. Every wrench has some sort of finish issue. Some I could live with, but there are a few wrenches that are just plain bad and already showing signs of rust. Has anyone ever dealt with Gray for warranty service? Am I overreacting since I got such a good deal in the first place?

How did you score yours for $19??? I paid $61 :(

I noticed that the piece of paper inside the box said something about "new and used" tools... wondering if you got a used set?

I will take a closer look but from what I remember, only one wrench had a small finish issue.

I'm not sure you'll be able to get any warranty on these. Someone mentioned that these were a limited production run made just for the mines up there. Good luck, but don't be surprised if they don't do anything, these tools were most likely never meant for consumers...

Not sure about this specific tool, but I just yesterday picked up a big pile of Gray wrenches I had warrantied through a local distributor, all for chipped chrome and rust.

No problems, I just dropped the old ones off and the new ones arrived a week or two later.

After removing the plastic I did find finish issues on almost every single wrench in the bunch. Some of which are very small and some of which are completely unacceptable and inexcusable on their part. It looks like the black coating was incorrectly applied. To me it seems like they had a bunch of these messed up sets laying around and thought they would do a "sale" to get rid of them. All they would have had to do was say "these sets have finish issues which should not effect overall performance", and my guess is they would have still sold out...

Are you going to call them about a possible refund/replacement?

I think I'm going to try to go through Gray for a warranty replacement first. I wanted to see if anyone else was having similar issues to mine. All of my wrenches have the same bubble that yours do on the tip of the open end. The one that really bugs me is the 7mm where the finish is completely peeling off and starting to rust. There were a few others in the set like this.

Really? For $19 you want a perfect wrench?! That's almost funny! For $19 you get a set of wrenches that you know will be only used infrequently.

Accet them for what they are and be happy with them. You'll spend more on postage than you did on the wrenches.

$19 will get you a perfect set of wrenches from many other brands. To me, a brand new quality wrench set for $19 which says "new" and nothing else means it will be as such - not a set with huge finish issues.

As he said, if it said seconds or mentioned any issues, it'd be fine. But new is new.

So if you saw these pics beforehand, you would have purchased them and been happy? I understand I got a great deal, but the finish shouldn't be peeling off a new wrench.

For $19 I'd expect a wrench that wasn't rusted right out of the box at the very least.

I don't think you got a 'great deal'. I don't care what brand name is on the wrench or what history they may have, the damn wrenches are rusted right from the get-go and that is unacceptable. You have every right to be very disappointed with this purchase and to request they make it right if possible.

Are you sure the deal wasn't for factory blemished tools? You know what they say about deals that are too good to be true....

If it was, it would have been nice to know. As I said the condition was posted as new. I'm going to try calling Gray on Monday. If they warranty them, great. If not, I'll live with them.

I think the key to this whole situation is that Gray does not normally make black oxide Stubby wrenches. As far as I know these were specially made for a certain customer than sold as overstocks. Do you have the right to be pissed off? Sure. Might Gray tell you to go pound sand and be right? Sure. If in fact these were custom orders, Gray has no responsibilities to anyone on this board. Yeah you all got a great deal on some factory one offs that may or may not have a warranty. I won't be surprised if this ends badly and people get burned, but that is the nature of closeouts.

If you bought them from a Gray dealer at the normal or even a sale price, I would say Gray definitely owes you a replacement. In this situation, if Gray does anything consider yourselves lucky...

FYI normal price for Gray stubby wrenches seems to be around $170 Canadian for the 11 piece set...

If I received them from GREY I would ask for some sort of replacement if they were sold to me as "NEW"... The lack of description falls blame to the seller. From what I understand these were never meant to be sold to the public. So going to GREY for warranty may turn out to be a dead end. IMHO it is not GREYS responsibility to warranty tools never meant to be sold to the general public.

I'd return them and go with a set from Northern Tool, but that's just me. A metric set in chrome from 10-19 can be had for $14.99 right now.

Too bad they're sold out of the 23 piece set. I'd have ordered one. As for the finish, I would be pissed since they're being passed off as new without any mention of problems. The pictures show sealed wrenches, and the close-ups show a fantastic finish, not at all like what you received.

I have to agree on this one... black oxide is a pretty horrid rust preventative. These wrenches were intended for industrial use.

If they were chrome and came with peeling chrome and rust, and it wasn't mentioned, I'd be irritated possibly, but TBH I live in a very dry area, and I still can see tools rust just by sitting in my toolbox.

I've gotten brand new Knipex, Klein, Channellock, etc., with rust spots on them, that happened some time between the factory and myself. Unless it's to the point where it impedes the function of the tool, I usually just wire brush the spots, apply some oil, and start using them.

Hey I can well understand why OP (and epdarks) are a bit pissed with this. I'm sure that deep down both guys know that they can just wipe them down and they'll still work fine, but it is disappointing when you buy something as new, only to find it's a "seconds" quality item.

The linked website says 90 day warranty, but then you'll prolly be paying for return shipping and there's no certainty that a replacement set will be any better. I actually had a similar experience with an impulse buy on some "run out special" wrenches at my local parts store. The guy accepted the return ok, but the new set (all shrink-wrapped so I couldn't properly inspect them) was even worse when I got home and opened them. Maaawh, in the end I just kept them and "got over it".

Personally I think that if I was in the op's situation, and the only return option was shipping them back to the supplier and hoping for the best, then I wouldn't bother. What I would do however is get one of the "rust convert" products of the type that turns rust to a hard black iron phosphate. Give them a good wipe down with this stuff until they're nice and black. With the black oxide finish I think this would also work well for maintaining them in good shape with the occasional wipe down.

BTW. I use "Selleys Rust Fix" when I want a black finish on something like this with a bit of surface rust. Not sure if that's just an Australian product, but for sure your local hardware will have something similar.

I bought these same wrenches on sale from the HOT DEAL thread except that I bought the whole SAE and Metric set for $61. I will say that mine aren't as bad as yours. There are a few flaws, but nowhere near yours.
