Grease for SDS+ drill bits ?

Hi guys,

Just saw a web page on youtube (but forgot to bookmark it) saying that putting grease on the sds+ drill bit was essential.

However, I don't know what amount of grease and what type of grease...
Any input from those who know would be great !!

where on the bit? on the shank that goes in the chuck or on the cutting end if the bit? I have never heard of this, but i also know nothing about sds+ bits, on the sbak could make sense to prevent the chuck from siezing up

You put it on the end you stick in the chuck , a big enough glob to cover the end. As far as what type I do not know it always supplied with the drill. the bit needs to float in the chuck for proper hammer action. One tip for drilling don't push so hard that the bit cannot bounce inside the chuck you should hear a nice ringing sound.

Just whiz it with some penetrating spray/lubricating oil. Its not too smart, it wont know the difference.

You grease the four grooves on the tail of the bit. No need to grease the end. Be sure to wipe off the grease when you pull the bit. Dirty grease will wear out your chuck.

Any type of grease will work. We've always just used cheap wheel bearing grease from Auto Zone or whatever.

However, the harder you push, the faster it drills. If you take a roto hammer and just let it bounce on its own weight the hole will never get drilled. You want to hear a solid thunking sound, not a ringing. Ain't no way you're going to stop that internal hammer from doing its job.

I use spray lithium grease because it's convenient.

Energy spent bouncing the drill motor up and down is energy not spent pounding the drill point into the work. It is a good way to wear out the chuck retention finger though.

Every roto hammer I've owned has said to only put a small amount on the END ONLY. Be careful how much you use as it can get hot and drip out off of the bit, staining the surface you're drilling into.......

Never seen any grease on at jobsites. I can see it getting nasty when drilling concrete overhead.

The chuck has a rubber seal that keeps the grease inside. If it wears out and let's dirt inside, that can wear out the chuck.
