Great deal on Wiha screwdriver set

Happened upon this while perusing the screwdriver section of McMaster-Carr. A lot of you might know that McMaster has a never-ending selection of hardware, but I figure most tool junkies don't pay much attention to the tool section.

McMaster-Carr product number 55095A41 is a 7-piece Wiha anti-cam out screwdriver set.

The Wiha Tools website shows a set with 6 pieces for $34.10.

The 7-piece set available from McMaster contains 2 more slotted and one less Phillips and is priced at $26.30.

The exact dimensions in the 7-piece set (in millimeters, oh no!) are:

I don't use screwdrivers very often so I probably won't be able to put them through a real test, but I have them here and they sure are pretty. There are a bunch of posts on this board attesting to the quality of Wiha drivers, though I'm not sure of any first-hand experience with this particular series.

For $26.30, I'm sure they'll work just fine for me.

I'll second a vote for Wiha. Nice stuff and nary a stink.
My daughter stole the set I bought...because they are so nice...so I'll have to buy some more.

The laser cut anti cam out tips look very interesting.

I seem to remember a screwdriver that had teeth or pyramids on the edges.

Pretty well. They're especially useful in areas like removing chromed screws from trim, where the fasteners are fairly easily damaged and a slip could be expensive.

As you'd expect, using them on frozen, rusted, screws will scuff off the ridges in fairly short order, but that's where these come into their own.

Another vote for wiha. I have two of their smaller sets. Wiha has a good web site but if you google their product numbers, your price will be much lower at other vendors. That set can be had for low $20s.

I just got in my ACO set + my super duper heavy duty set. Nary a stink.

The funny thing is how heavy the HD ones are, probably because there's actually screwdriver blade though the whole handle. Not that I truly need good screwdrivers, but the quality difference between those and my Craftsmen is pretty darned obvious.

I've also come up with my Screwdriver Rorschach Test(tm). What you do is show a Craftsman and a Wiha to one of my friends and it'll go either:

Person with a little brain left in them: Huh? Hey, that's pretty cool. Look, they have a hex gizmo so you can put a wrench on them and a place to hit them. Jeesh, they sure look better made.

Old Fart: Huh? What in the hell do you need those for? You know, I used to own a 327 Camaro with 700 horsepower <more every year...editor's note> and blah blah blah.

This thread had me doing some surfing last night. I haven't bought anything from it yet, but made some notes.

ACO Anti Cam Out is also called ACR Anti Cam out Ribbed in other brands.

Wiha makes a line of premium bits, but none I found with ACO. Vermont and B&D appear to make some.

Wiha has about 4 "grades" of screw driver, regular, ACO, heavy duty, and super duty.

Prices are very reasonable on individual ACO and other screwdrivers if you want to buy one and see how you like it.

Get the hand impact driver. It's been a lifesaver for me. Great for removing door strikers. I've had the Sears one for years and beat the snot out of it, and it still works great, so much that the end is starting to mushroom some . One time though, it sorta destroyed a #2 phillips screw I was working on. It is definetly better for large screws.

Seriously, though, I've gently tapped the slot clean and freed up rusted screws where I wanted to re-use them and would have balked at battering them with an impact driver.

Nope, nothing special needed. It's a little awkward getting through the checkout process at first, but it'll save your information for future purchases. They have several warehouses around the country; I live in St. Louis, so my orders come from Chicago. I almost always get the package the next day by UPS Ground. I even got the shipment on the same day once. It's a pretty awesome place.

Did you get the 530 or the 533 series exta heavy duty set, and where from and how much? I'm trying to sort out the differences. I've sure been eyeballing them. Course I'd have to throw a Craftsman into the drawer to satisfy the smell issue, but that wouldn't be a problem

It was the 53097 set plus a couple of hex driver handles (a shortie and a mediumie)...is the 533 series those harsh environment black handled ones?

They are a crack up to heft, the difference between these things and Craftsmen is remarkable. Like most of humanity, a set of HF screwdrivers would probably be just fine in terms of results in my world, but it's nice to buy decent stuff.

I've poked myself too many times when a screwdriver slips, so its blood over gold for me, I think I may buy the best I can, and loan out the HF until its gone.
